Smooth Potentiometers?

When I buy new pots, I just get whatever CTS pots are sold at the usual places. But I find that they're not all that smooth, and that some cheap Alpha pots I have feel nicer. Then I tried a custom-made fuzz pedal that my friend owns, and the pots used for the knobs are ridiculously smooth -- really, really nice. How can I get pots like these for my guitars? Does it go with the brand? And how can I identify a type of pot that will respond this way?

I purchase specially-selected CTS pots from RS. they're all smooth and all in spec. Each pot is labeled with its tested resistance - the last pair of 500k pots I purchased for example were 549K and 543K.

check out the "super potentiometers" on that page.

not cheap, but if you keep having to drive to the store (or pay shipping) and throw away out-of-spec pots, I think the supers are worth it.
