So are any major guitar companies offering new instruments worthy of the pricetag?

Re: So are any major guitar companies offering new instruments worthy of the pricetag

Jackson used to be an amazing company, now I think all their models are crap (unless you spend like $5000 which isn't worth it) I wouldn't personally buy another Jackson again.

Hmmm...Jackson was the first company that came to mind when I read the title. Just about any good dealer will get you a US Soloist, Rhoads, King V, Kelly, or Dinky for under $2000.

Their production models are stellar.

The new Washburn models are cheaper, but I hear now some of them are made in Indonesia. I've heard some complaints with some of their lines than their Korean counterpart. It looks like they're refining their guitars from last year. I'd still look at the WM526, they're plain awesome

Re: So are any major guitar companies offering new instruments worthy of the pricetag

I see much resemblance between the American big car companies and the big guitar companies.

Overpriced, over-reliant on brand power and heritage, lack of innovation, no real efforts to export, loosing to the Japanese when it comes to value for money...

:scratchch

That being agreed upon, I have to add that Ibanez is raising prices across the board. You're looking at American Deluxe Prices (or more) if you want a Prestige Ibby (which are the ones made in Japan)

PRS!

$500 SE's that slam dunk over the heads of everyone else within $500 of their price.

I have had some PRS SEs. I stupidly sold my Soapbar II Maple. They are very good, but there are a number of companies with better guitars in the price range: ESP ltd (H-500, EC 500, EC 400VF, PB500 with P-Rails, etc.), G&L Tribute, and Reverend, among a number of others.

Couldn't agree more. SEs are excellent for the price. On the other end of the price spectrum, Caparisons are are great IMHO. I have a Horus Black Night/GO model and really love it.

Re: So are any major guitar companies offering new instruments worthy of the pricetag

You guys need to stop judging guitar pricing by what happened in a booming economy. That doesn't apply anymore. Guitars are not a basic necessity like food & shelter. Consumer spending is dropping every month. More & more people aren't going to fit guitars into their budgets. Manufacturers that haven't figured this out are in for a surprise. Denial only works for so long.

I can't believe manufacturers haven't figured this out either. :scratchch

I mean, c'mon... do these guys look out the window? Does it look like folks are going to spend more than they ever had in the past on a luxury item? You'd think so considering all the price hikes.

Re: So are any major guitar companies offering new instruments worthy of the pricetag

Well, you're talking about prices on your country, and here we are talking about prices in the U.S.A.

I live in Brazil, and due to high taxes imported instruments are very expensive. However I could get a custom made neck-thru bodied guitar with top notch parts and brasilian rosewood for under 1500 american dollars (which here is less than a fender american standard),but that said,it won't have a high resale value,so most of the people buy standard guitars instead of going custom.

But on the same token, if you bought a custom guitar, chances you've bought it because you're far more likely to keep it anyway, so for me personally, the resale value of a custom guitar is little concern and the joy and the enjoyment value of playing and owning one would far outweigh the potential lower than production guitar resale value IMO.

It's entirely likely their offices don't HAVE windows. I mean, I thought that was the big deal with the corner office but maybe they saved all that window space for those insignificant workers? Maybe those guys in charge are REALLY in cubicles and scurrying around between other cubicles.

Hey, it could happen.......:scratchch

:D

I'm a big fan of Japanese made Fenders but other then Custom Shop the USA ones don't do it for me. Warmoth made copies are much better then the couple of US fenders I've played (60th Anniversary Strat and 52 reissue Tele)

Re: So are any major guitar companies offering new instruments worthy of the pricetag

Ernie Ball/Music Man still make amazing instruments.

AMEN to that!
any of their guitars are great, all hand made in SLO, CA.
check out the BFR (ball family reserve) guitars, namely, the JP models... smokin!
amazing craftsmanship!

And of course Carvin are still doing their part.

Re: So are any major guitar companies offering new instruments worthy of the pricetag

They're overpriced in Poland for sure! But I can see that argument where comparing other instruments that require way way way way more precision and workmanship is quite valid.

Or not.

I have this strange feeling that lately guitar makers have been producing more gimmicks than real ways to refine a guitar's sound. Automatic tuning, pre-aged/worn looks, etc. So it seems as if though guitars have reached their peak, yet their prices are getting higher (for the ones without the added gimmicks).

Re: So are any major guitar companies offering new instruments worthy of the pricetag

Another vote for Carvin.

I've tried a few of the $999 Charvels.
Thought those very very nice guitars for the price.

Imports? MIJ
ESP/EDWARDS.
Bacchus.
Tokai.
Of course you have to order from Japan.
Worth it imho.

Re: So are any major guitar companies offering new instruments worthy of the pricetag

The Michael Kelly patriots are right on par with PRS SE as far as I'm concerned. I don't own one, but have played many. I'm thinking of ditching my Gibby Explorer and checking out a 400-700 guitar like a SE, Michael Kelly, or a LTD. I'm over my hang up on the Gibson name, although my LP Studio will never leave me. I still think Epi has some nice guitars for the price if you look long enough. The 57 re-issue Jr. I got from Wattage is killer.
