So I FINALLY tried Alnico 4 in a neck PAF...

Have a 59 in the neck on my 95 Washburn MG 102 that I swapped in a A4 and love it. Agree with your take of the tone 100%.

... and I love it.

To my ears, it's the clearest magnet I've heard for a neck bucker. Really articulate, crisp top end, and a very detailed bottom. Zero mud. Almost a strat-like quality to the attack, which I really dig.

If that's the way you feel, then try A3.

To much attention is given to the so-called "e.q." of different magnets, and too little to the output. IME, output is the main difference between different magnet types. That translates to e.q. differences at given amp settings, but it's largely due to different amounts of compression. Adjust for e.q. differences using your amp's tone knobs, and you're really just hearing different magnets hitting the amp at different levels of output, causing more or less compression.

ItsaBass- I know this is an old thread,
However, you have an interesting take on mags. I remember loving A4's for a long time, then I liked UOA5's, but the last couple of years I really like the sound of a roughcast A5. And I may be wrong, but they seem to sound "grittier" for lack of a better word. Brighter, more upper mids, more of an attack, as if my pick had been run over some rough sandpaper. These qualities that I hear, are the same regardless of the pickup I use. So: is there something more to this "Roughcast" thing that is different than just a volume increase. I play on a very clean amp at my condo so I really hear all the details.
