So I got Sick of the SM57...

Re: So I got Sick of the SM57...

How much of that tone is stuff you've done post? I got a 57 and don't get near that warm of a tone. I also dont have any equipment lol. Tone is killer there...mix it with the 57 and it'll be perfect.

Re: So I got Sick of the SM57...

The only things I've done post were standard LPF and HPF, and two very, very slight dips in the high-mids and low-mids. (like -.3db for each)

I tried blending with the 57 in a few different positions (and yes, before anyone asks, phase was the first thing on my mind), and It never came out sounding as good as the single i5. It always added a bit of boxiness to the midrange, and sounded smaller in the top end. It was never as defined, either.

Compared to the 57, the i5 has a much more open and sweet sounding top end, a nicer midrange to my ears, and a bigger low end (probably the result of it responding more to proximity effect than the 57). That, and it was a helluva a lot easier to place!

I love this little thing, and from my experience with other Audix products, I think they could be my favorite mic brand.

since your sick of the 57.. are you gonna sell it or get rid of it?

Keep it, for sure. It still kicks ass on snares and toms!

Wow, sounds pretty nice. The low end seems to mush out on the low chugs though. And... Glass Prison rip off?

I honestly haven't heard the song in years, I'll have to go check it out. FWIW, I really hate Dream Theater :(.

Re: So I got Sick of the SM57...

Yeah, I just took a listen and realized why it was so familiar when writing it.

Thank god it wasn't an actual song I was writing, just a test run!

Hey that sounds fantastic what kind of amp you using, guitar and pickups. Also curious of what type of drum program have you used in sleight of hand? They sound vary natural.

wow, that sounds awsome! Where did you end up placing the mic?

The chain for the rhythm guitars was a C-1 Stealth with 81/81 -> OD808 -> 5150 -> Mesa cab.

Drums are all DFHS, kick and snare blended with other samples.

Re: So I got Sick of the SM57...

I would actually like petrucci if he had this tone.

I hear a big improvement in guitar tone between this and your recent JB clip.

Re: So I got Sick of the SM57...

oooo.... that DOES sound pretty bitchin! I could hear the difference right away.

Something about '57s on guitar cabs have never really sat right with me. I can't put my finger on it. This mic sounds niiiiiice.

Sounds very nice.

You've gone back to a 2x12" setup again even after swearing by the thump of a quad box?

Yeah - live, nothing replaces the air being pushed by a 4x12.

That said, with the Mesa 2x12 Vert's, the air to speaker ratio in the cab is the same as in their 4x12's. This makes them sound 99% identical when mic'd up.

That said, when I start playing live again, I'll be getting a 4x12 trad cab.

I'm starting reamping in 10 minutes for the other clips - should be good!
