So I got to play a Marshall 100 watt JMP MV and a JCM 800 2204 today...

Well this confirms I have the Marshall fever and it got the tone I wanted when I put the Catalinbread SCOD in front of it, so I would glady take either one. Maybe it was just me or how I had the tone controls set, but I personally could not tell that much a difference tonal wise. Of course the 50 watter distorted quicker and had a tad bit more compression while the JMP stayed loose and took a while to distort (I try to keep the pre-amp below 5). To be honest, I couldn't tell a difference, I checked and they both had been fitted with EL34's. So I did just get lucky in finding two that sounded the same or is my hearing not good then?

EDIT: Now that I have been thinking about it, even though I want these amps, they are over 25 years old. The JMP cosmetically was in pretty bad shape and so was JCM (not as bad though). While I am not going to be touring with this head constantly, I am just worried about spending at worst more than what I bought on the amp brand for repairs. So I think I might just look at getting a Ceriatone 2204 or 2203 without the OT, PT, and choke. Then just send it to a guy in Houston who will put in some quality stuff and then I can have my tone. What do you think?

I have a 100 watt JMP MKII. Speakers are everything. You can compare them both with good speakers, but with great speakers they will absolutley blow youre friggin mind. Both of them. They are pretty much the same amp If I am not mistaken,a t least the early issue JCM800's.
For the absolute tone, Nothing compares to an early issue marshall. No high gain amp, no Bogner , nO matchless ...NOTHING!
IN fact, I will say that they are the most underrated bargains of the present time(even though they are prety expensive).I think eventually you will see them reach icon status, and you wont be able to find one or touch one- 5..10 years tops.

I like old Marshalls, but they can be a hassle to maintain, unless someone already refurbished it.

Before going the route of project amps, you might consider finding a bargain on one of the newer copies made by someone who's really studied Marshall tone....such as Germino, Blockhead, Splawn, Aiken etc. It's always nice when someone dumps one for half what they paid.

dude thats an idiotic statement. How can you say something like that? have you ever even played a Bogner? No. Youve never even heard a matchless. Just cause you can afford a Marshall JMP 100 MKII MVdoesnt mean its the greatest amp in existence.you really need to think before you blurt out blanket statements like that.
