So I got to play a Vintage Modern Combo today....

Was at the Evil Empire this afternoon and plugged into a Vintage Modern combo, I've never been big on the Marshall cleans but I was pretty happy in that department, wasn't uber impressed with the distorted gainier tones though, I thought it made my axe sound muddy compared to the 5150 III 50 watter that I plugged into while I was there also....

I'm sure though if I had more time with it I could have eq'd a better sound out of it....

You need to crank up the gain to the most you would ever want and then use the guitar volume knob to tame it. That's how the amp was designed to work. If you sounded muddy, you likely had the body too high or the detail too low. I love mine, btw.

KT66' are a midrange nasally sounding tube compared to el34s and 6l6'. Add to that an open back combo, and yeah, I can see how someone would consider it muddy.

Closed back cab be the key to the VM (and pretty much every Marshall past or present).

Not that it will cure the famous Marshall overhang and backwave compression.

The YJM also has some decent clean tones when set a certain way.

It's a really cool amp, but you have to understand that.. the classic Marshall gain tone that the VM is after, is closer to the plexis and the old, kind of mushy, kind of bass heavy designs. They aren't designed for tight gain and the chuggahs. The 'brown' sound if you would.

Also keep in mind that if you were at a guitar centre or something similar, you couldn't really crank it up to the point that it would start to gain back some of it's definition and thump from the speakers being pushed. One of the clubs I play has the halfstack version, and I often turn up the master and keep the volume fairly low, and I've found it has a really amazing and lush clean sound, with just a hint of hair when you dig in. I wouldn't really be looking at it if I were a metalhead.
