i was practicing this afternoon, i started with my LP and then switched to my strat, and i had this thought...what would a LP sound if it had single coils in it...i don't mean coil splitting or putting in hotrails, but actually if it had single coil pups. has any one tried this or heard of anyone that has done it?

Re: so i got to thinking today...

no not p-90's. i know they sound like single coils. i'm thinking more along the lines of Texas Hot's or Lace sensors, or SD's

Oh, gotcha....I love singles in the neck spot and always thought of putting one in my Les Paul........with an adapter like this:

Re: so i got to thinking today...

oohh, they have adapters?! where can i get them? i would love to give them a go. maybe put it on my back up Mutt LP. though, really i wonder what an Epi black beauty would sound with 3 single coils rather than 3 buckers...

Re: so i got to thinking today...

i think singles would sound pretty dead in a thick, LP style mahogany body. I think part of what makes singles sing the way the do is the fact that they are in a thinner, naturally brighter body. In a thick mahogany body i think they would lose a lot of dynamic and sparkle and just sound pretty bland. With the strat being so popular, im sure gibson would have experimented with singles in their guitars and considering they dont make any LPs with singles in it.....it probably sounds bad

Re: so i got to thinking today...

you've got a good point there. my back up Lp is made out of alder and is chambered, so it transfers vibrations pretty good. i'm guessing, that the pots would have to be replaced (maybe 250k's) and maybe the cap values must change or be removed out of the circuit.

Re: so i got to thinking today...

I played one with singles in it with those adapter rings like was posted earlier. It sounded thinner than a piece of paper

The biggest problem is the location of the p'ups. All three are slanted and they aren't situated under the "right" harmonic vibration nods.

If well situated, they shouldn't sound too bad. They would sound "stratty", but by no means as a strat.

A chambered Lester would be a good platform for single coils, if you ask me.

Another thing that makes a Start sound like one is the scale, 25 1/2".

All things equal, due to the shorter scale (the Lester scale is 24 3/4"), less brightness is to be expected.

And last but not least, is the lack of a harness-like wired pickguard... that would affect the general tone of the guitar making it sound less and less "stratty".

Bottom line: wanna strat sound? Get a strat and learn to live with all the quirks Lester players wouldn't know about.

HTH,

Re: so i got to thinking today...

a local player has a beat to junk 1973'ish Les Paul Deluxe that has had the neck broken many times and it's another Deluxe one that the original Mini's went bad... he stuck in a strat pickup in both slots!!! the bridge one is angled like a strat... it's been that way for years... I believe the PU's are a Canadian brand Jeff Healey once used called Evan's....

Re: so i got to thinking today...

Apparently PRS have done a few in their private stock department, and they sound really good from what little information I have been able to find. Apparently they sound like a fuller, fatter, more dynamic strat, but warmer.

Re: so i got to thinking today...

I once saw on ebay a LP adapted to EMG sa's....looked gorgeous

Re: so i got to thinking today...

leave it to PRS to try something i may actually want to buy. i like the way they look too. i'm tempted to make this my summer project...

Re: so i got to thinking today...

a single coil will fit in a normal humbucker mounting ring, while it will have slots in it, you can just cover those with tape of some sort.
