orange TT arrived, neat sound

however:

1 i ran it with an MXR zakk wylde OD, doesn't sound smooth and tubular. TT sounds fine by itself. wondering could a TS9 make any improvements? how do you guys like the zakk wylde od?

2 for a brief while I tried running my digitech rp350 in front of it. ok, i have some really nice distortion patches set in my rp350. but i noticed i have to up the volume knob almost to 12 with the gain at 12 as well, to obtain a decent real volume. is it because digital signals are not compatible with how tubes work? would this set-up damage tubes in the long run? tonewise, it is still a digitech sound, i can't hear much difference running it through those tubes :(

3 how are you guys using your oranges?

thx for the input

Re: so i just got an orange TT !!!

I played a Tiny Terror & 4x12 straight for about an hour & change this past weekend... pretty cool rig. Doesn't sound at all like an old Orange, and not like anything else inc. a Vox AC... Only really has a few shades & sounds but they're REALLY good ones if you like that sorta thing!

1 - Haven't much played with the Zakk overdrive... but when I did it reminded me of my ancient MIJ boss sd1 which isn't too surprising since he used an sd1 for a million years... I tried a bunch of different boosts into the TT and they all had strengths & weaknesses but pushed the TT into meltdown...

2 - Any Digikrap box is still a Digikrap box. You buy an amp like the Tiny Terror so you can STOP using a Digikrap box! If you really love the sounds in your box & need to use the box, get a solid state rig like a JC120... really optimize the amplification for the box...

Re: so i just got an orange TT !!!

While I have no real world experience with the tt or ZW od, I do own a Rocker 30 combo and a keeley mod ts9. I've found the ts9 works best as simply what it's meant for; a slight od boost. I usely set the amp to where the gain is just barely less than I'd like then when I need a little more, I stomp on the ts9. The settings on the ts9 make a hige difference on my r30. I've found setting the drive anywhere past noon is too much and that I like the tone almost all the way down. Too much drive makes it sound inarticulate and almost fuzzy except on real heavy palm muted stuff. Too much tone, makes it way too bright and brittle sounding on high notes making you feel like your ears are gonna bleed. Also, I don't always use the ts9, in fact lately I've been using it less and less. I like to set the gain to kill then roll off the guitar volume for rythym tones then turn it up for leads and whatnot.

Ditch the digitech, seriously. With a real amp like the tt, you def want some good fx pedals if you want something the tt doesn't offer.

Take that as you will, the R30 and TT aren't the same, but are somewhat similar from what I've heard.

yes indeed. i was merely hooking up the digitech to see wot it would sound like...imo, the rp350 is still a good thing to have, the effects aren't that disappointing and i can use it with a headphone for practice (or recording) when i don't have an amp around.

well, since you guys said the zakk od is basically a boss sd1, i guess it's time to look for a real tube screamer~

i also tried another set-up, which made me a lot happier.

so i have an AMT tube magnum, that has a 12AX7 in it. i ran my zakk od-->amt--->orange, with the drive on the amt about 3 oclock, little gain on both the od and the orange tt, then crank the volume up (since i set the level on the AMT to around 9, it somehow allowed me to turn the volume on the TT to about 11 oclock, only producing a tolerable volume) actually, can anyone explain how the signal works here? i guess it's because the gain on TT was set really low?

anyway, that set-up gave me a perfect petrucci sound... no lying here.
the TT sounded fuzzy at high gain alone, with the OD it's more fuzzy. i wanted to have a smooth sounding tone for solo. the AMT sounded smooth previous when i ran it in a solid state combo

when it comes to rhythm, this set-up delivers a rather OK tone, mid heavy and punchy, good thing is no fuzz, no brittleness (tone knob at 10 oclock) but im sure there is better rhythm tone elsewhere

anyway, thx for sharing your thoughts~

and keep experimenting
