my 5150 is on the way!!! yay

so if i understand correctly, as long as i do not turn the volume past 2 or something, i can safely run this 120w sucka into my 90w cab???

also, any suggestions on the pre-amp tubes if i ever need to change them?

ya i'd be careful not to blow that speaker... i've used my 5150 head thru a 150watt Marshall 1x12 and have come close to blowing that speaker... at least it felt like i was going to wreck it.... i had that thing open half way and that 1x12 was just a movin... but it survived to live another day...

oooo so u had the volume halfway??? ur neighbors musta been real mad!

im thinking i ll never turn volume over 20%, hopefully it works. isn't volume proportional to the actually power being produced? be it linear or log or exponential?

well that was at an outdoor gig and we had the cops show up... we were hired by a Home Depot to play in their parking lot on Canada Day... the whole area was phoning the store to complain.... and the laywer across the street was going to sue the store... in fact we had the cops show up more then a few times when i was volume crazy with that amp... soon i switched to a much quieter stage rig... soundmen were even happier...

but that 5150 amp brings out the devil in me... part of the reason i switched from 5150 4x12 to the Marshall 1x12 was to sort of tame the volume

anyways i'm not the most technical guy with electronics and speakers and such... what i've been told is an amp will send spikes of power to the speaker... that is why a 100watt Marshall cab can be blown with a 100watt Marshall head....

Re: so i m getting a 5150

cops, thats hilarious...

well i read something, apparently the wattage is rms root mean squared, so 100w head might send out a much larger signal...and the website says a 100w head would put out 100w power at volume=2... (not even 2 oclock, just 2 out of 10)

this is insane!!! looks like i gotta be really careful.

also, the 5150 i got came with electro harmonic 6l6eh power tubes... are they good?

Re: so i m getting a 5150

use your own ears... if the amp sounds good to you the 6L6's in it must be good for sound... but until you get a better speaker cab you will not really be able to test the power tubes eh... mine had a whole bunch of mis-matched tubes in it when i bought it... i thru in a set of Solvtech's or whatever the Russian tubes were called back then... i've had those tubes in it for over 10 years now... but i don't use that amp much anymore

do you know how long the tubes were in the amp before you bought it? sometimes i retube used amp right away so i know how long the life of teh tubes have been... other times i just use them as is

Re: so i m getting a 5150

not sure how long but im still waiting for the head to arrive~ maybe i ll bring it to the music store to test it first:approve:

Re: so i m getting a 5150

Sounds like you should be okay as long as you keep your volume low and limit your playing time. You don't want to overheat the speaker's coils. But for the record I have JJ power tubes in mine and sovtek 12ax7s. The sovteks are really quiet, I don't need a noise gate but I keep my gain around 3-4. The higher you push the gain the more feedback and white noise you get. This amp is crazy loud so you really wouldnt have to go past 2 or 3 on the volume. Last gig I played I started out with my volume at 4 and the sound guy made me turn down lol.
