So I put a downpayment on a Les Paul...

...and since you all don't mind repetitive posts I thought I'd ask some advice.

I *love* Seths but I'm thinking about a different sound. Maybe even A5. Here are some of the options I'm considering

1) Antiquitys
2) Set of 59's
3) Set of PG's
4) 59b Jazz neck
5) Fralins
6) 59b PGn

As you can tell I favor vintage style pickups. I don't think that the JB or CC are an option for me or the C5 either. Discuss.

Re: So I put a downpayment on a Les Paul...

You couldn't go wrong with any of those! All great pickups.

I'd be most tempted to try the set of PG's or Antiquitys.

There are many interesting combos. YOU've got to decide which is your favourite ;)
But I'd consider the Antiquitys and Fralins as most vintage... but I'm not that shure about the Fralins... never heard them in real live... just what people say about them..

Re: So I put a downpayment on a Les Paul...

I don't know how much you like P-90s, but I'm becoming very interested in a '59b/Phat Cat neck combo for guitars like yours. I love the sound of a '59b.

Re: So I put a downpayment on a Les Paul...

I'm really leaning toward the 59b although I love Rev Billy G's tone too, so the PG's are tempting. I don't want a woofy neck pickup though.

Re: So I put a downpayment on a Les Paul...

PG(b)/Jazz(n)?

i've heard some people prefer the jazz over the '59 in the neck, saying it has nicer bass response..

Re: So I put a downpayment on a Les Paul...

I don't really even like using the PGs for ZZ Top tones. They don't work well with my hands. Billy uses a real soft, easy attack and so for him, the pickup yields a nice warm grind but with a slight rawness on top. I use a much stronger pick attack so I just end up with a fuzzy buzzsaw top end. The '59s stay nice and clear for me on top.

I didn't get along with the PG(n). I much prefer the APH in the neck. 59' in the bridge for some bite. As soon as UGD is over, I'll be trying a PG(b) with an APH Neck, and then a 59'(b) with an APH neck.

I can report back later.

If I had a Les Paul I would be very interested in a set of the Alnico II PRO APH-1s.

What you have other than the Jimmy Vaughan Strat?

On my "When I get anothr Les Paul" list is a Dual Pearly Gates set. I love the PG neck! Lick a 59 but with a little more (of everything good). And cleans up nicely. I pick heavy too and don't have the fuzz/fizz problem.

Down payment on a LP................Thats right, with Gibsons inflated prices they pretty require a mortgage for the average person to afford. :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

+1 I couldn't have said it better! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: So I put a downpayment on a Les Paul...

That's why I've lowered my standards on what I consider a "Les Paul" - Check the Kaman GTX 36 listing below! If it looks like a paul, and it's heavy like a paul, Some decent pups will rock it out!

LMfAO. I was thinking the same thing.

Now back on topic,
I think you would probably like a 59(b) APH(n) set.

Umm... who ever said it was a Gibson :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: So I put a downpayment on a Les Paul...

If it took a "down payment" and it wasn't a Gibson - you got ripped off! And even more reason to go for the pup swap. Double PGs! (DOn't want to get busted for being "off topic")

But now that you have raised our interest - please don't hold us in suspense...

And my Kaman GTX 36 LP Custom Kicks Ass! But my Epiphone PG/CC sounds best overall....And nothing still beats #1 (79 Standard Cherry Sunburst - and I wouldn't trade it for your house)
