So I scalloped my RG 1527

daemon barbeque

Zuhahahaologist
It was a PITA job ,since i didn't have any good machines ,and most of the work was made with sanding paper. It took me 12 hours to finish ,and it still has some spots to smoothen out...
But I got my custom strings and didn't have the patience to work with sand paper with my hurting/burning hands/fingers.

So the puppy is stringed ,works well and plays liek butter.
The susatin is better ,the exotic bendings are really beautifull.
After playing a month or so ,i will re-sand it to the perfection.

I am getting a custom guitar ,so i wanted to test and know what kind of neck i need really.

Anyways I am happy.:D

Re: So I scalloped my RG 1527

at least you took your time... the spankin monkey that did the scallops on my 87 Kramer before i bought it must of used a chain saw.... he even removed chunks of fret

Re: So I scalloped my RG 1527

Sounds like a blast.

I will be the person to say it : We needs pics!

Re: So I scalloped my RG 1527

I wanted to do some actually ,but the weather is just soo bad today!!!
BTW i am not a luthier ,nor ever do soemthing like that.So it's not really "well made" heheh.
But it works well"

Re: So I scalloped my RG 1527

here a pic...sorry too crappy light :( The asymmetry was planned ,since i don't finger the frets at those points.

Re: So I scalloped my RG 1527

That doesn't look bad at all. You should see my Tele that someone got ahold of before I bought it. It's the most intense scalloping (a good quarter of an inch ALL the way up and down the board...idiot) that I've ever seen. Yours looks good.

Re: So I scalloped my RG 1527

Thanx guys..
The problem is ,it's hard to sand so "fine" without machines. It's painfull ,so i will test this baby for a while ,and next time (when i change the strings) I will do the final sanding.

the Wizard neck is not thick ,so I scalloped allmost just the 2/5 of the board wood.

Re: So I scalloped my RG 1527

my first scallop on the yamaha pacifica was too deep... But then i learned, and my second scallop was just enough - and asymetrical just behind the fret. I didn't fret (no pun intended) about sanding it too much, because its all about the playability to me. But i did it completely by hand. Files and lots of sandpaper. no machines. Looooots of masking tape for the frets though - 3 layers.

Yeah I used 2 layers of tape !120 for sanding was too PITA ,and 240 for fine sanding was allright.
I used Olive oil to clean the frest and get the dust away...
Man i need 3-4 more ourst to make it really slick!

I didn't know that you play scalloped necks. There are not too much people around who plays scalloped necks

Re: So I scalloped my RG 1527

That looks pretty good man, I would be proud of that job!
Thanx Phil...
As someone whoe did lot's of animal surgeries ,I assume i have to get better on woodworking.
It's not perfect yet (alltough it plays allmost perfect ,one fret is too shallow).
But i will have time to do it right.

And now i know what kind of neck i need on my Custom made 8 stringer!

Re: So I scalloped my RG 1527

ZOMG! Dude, that will require pics!!!
Indeed!:D

it's a modified Kelly with 700mm scale ,27 Fretts (all scalloped)
Wenge Neck thru with ash wings and top.Epoxy/Poli finish.Tru-oiled neck with Birdseye Maple board.
It could be Blood orange or blue...I am not shure hehe:D

Thats cool. Actually i try to play everything (when i actually play). I have a triple neck guitar (6-7-12). And I want a fretless guitar. I also have a synth guitar going through a GR-30. So I am playing with that.

That scalloped guitar - is a home made telecaster (custom body and neck) made from parts. Unfortunately The intonation on the high E and B strings is really flat. And I need 2 really long screws to make it right. If the intonation on those 2 strings was fixed, then I would play that guitar a whole lot more, because i do love the scalloped feel.

I also have all imagined neck contours - thin, thick, compound radius, 12", 16", etc... Just gotta try everything before I make up my mind what to use.

I do love my custom Heritage guitar and my Eric Johnson strat though.

doing that work in my mind is better by hand then machines... i may finnish the scallop job on my old Kramer and refret it someday... i'll most likely just use files and sandpaper myself... The guy that scallop this poor Kramer went way too deep... i'll try and save it and add some more inlays...

Wow!I think i will go with a Flat board.I love that feeling better. And it's easier to palm mute on 8 strings!!

Re: So I scalloped my RG 1527

I do! But I had someone else do it- I wouldn't trust my skills. He did a great job though.

I didn't trust mine either.But every luthier I asked...
a)Didn't wanted to do
b)Wanted t do but wanted lot's of money (Wich is legitimate)
c)Wanted too much time to finish it!

So it was a cool experiment ,experience and body/mind training for me!
