So I've got a set of Duncan Brian Mays...what do I do with them?

Got a set of Duncan Brian May pickups in a trade and have no guitar to put them in.

Does anyone have experience fitting these to anything other than a Brian May replica?

Find yourself a fireplace mantle, and build a guitar to put them in! ;)

He also modified the middle pickup to make it rw/rp.

Yeah - these pickups were used in the 80s but I think the set that I got were a more recent custom shop job.

If they were mine, I'd have Chandler or Warmoth make a custom strat pickguard, then throw them in an alder/rosewood American Strat.

The pups in the original guitar are anything but regular. BM and dad modded them in various ways - lowered inductance and magentic strength of neck pup; bridge and neck pups potted with Araldite; and some other things, remember that pups back in the day weren't designed for their respective positions on the guitar, so BM and dad did it to exacerbate their tonal differences. As to which pup is rw/rp, it's a contentious issue - some people think it's the bridge because of the way it responds with Brian's most commonly used settings (bridge-middle ip; neck-middle oop).

The Duncan pups were used in the second run of Guild BM guitars (1991-94ish) but were/are also available from the custom shop. I don't know how they are on the inside but the originals had a two piece ceramic magnet with a tape wound coil jammed around it - Adeson makes them this way.

The first run of Guilds from 1984 used DiMarzio pups, which were completely different - one forum bro has them in a guitar.

Tri-Sonic style pups are bigger than Fender style singles, so you'd have to mod the scratchplate if you're putting them in a guitar that has normal sized singles.

BM wiring scheme. The RS actually has 220k omeg pots. Green wire is pup chassis shield.

Here's my question - will they fit a standard single coil route? I'm almost thinking I'd have to have a swimming pool route in a Strat to fit accordingly.

I haven't tried the Duncan BHM pickups. I owned a set of the Dimarzio BHM pickups and they were #$%^!

didnt know Duncan made these.. curious to see how they are.??

Chrismo, are you captainchrismo on youtube?

Re: So I've got a set of Duncan Brian Mays...what do I do with them?

why would you want to sound like Brian may?

if it were me i'd sell them and get something which I could use or needed.

EDIT: YEARS ago my granddad and the drummer, Roger Taylor, worked together briefly in the same department at the local council!!!

Yes sir. Unfortunately I deleted the Gmail account associated with that Youtube account and could never get back in to upload any new videos. I think the last one is from 2009? :smack:

Measurements: 74mm (length) x 21mm (width) x 9mm (height). I don't have a Strat style guitar so I can't tell you whether it would fit into a standard route.

Yes, Snowdog, you were the one I was thinking of - microphonic as hell, weren't they. Can't believe they wouldn't pot them at the factory.

I've got a set of Adesons waiting for a guitar, they gotta be the coolest looking single coils on the block. They would really pop in a black guitar.

Not trying to replicate his sound - these pickups fell into my lap out of nowhere. I dig some of the tones that Brian gets, and it's like a beefed up Strat, so I figured I'd give 'em a shot. :biglaugh:

Ashurbanipal - thanks for the great diagrams! Hopefully I'll forward it over to my tech to assemble the thing when I come up with it!

Re: So I've got a set of Duncan Brian Mays...what do I do with them?

Contemplating getting a Fender Blacktop as it has an alder body, swimming pool route, and rosewood neck (with or without Floyd Rose)...I'm thinking that the bridge pickup might have to be slanted to avoid any conflicts with the knobs. Thoughts? :)

I've been toying around with the idea of putting some Tri-sonics in a strat myself and I was also wondering about slanting the bridge pickup.

Unfortunatly i'm still in the planning stages of the project. Looking forward to see what you do with the pickups!
