So, NY XL strings….

I finally broke a string on the guitar that had them. After like two freaking years! And a term guitar no less. The played well, sounded good, and really held up long term. That's right - two years on and gel;d their tone / feel etc.

I got me four more sets….


I don't think I'm getting rid of my Boomers, but for those guitars that I don't want to goof with all the time, these might be excellent!

I'm guessing you keep your guitars cased? I didn't have the same long term luck but they are really decent strings!

I can't say I've had the same luck with them yet. Last set broke after a few days.

The set I tried prematurely corroded, so I'm back to coated strings like Elixirs or Cleartones

Glad to hear it. Their life should be able to justify that 12 bucks a set.

I've used them on a couple of my guitars. They do seem to last longer

curious what did you do to it? I have never had a lower string ever broken.

Just some chugging stuff. I'm pretty hard on my strings, but the only time I've ever had a wound string break was on a bridge that has a sharp edge. Once I cleaned it up, I never had a problem and never with tune-o-matics. I checked over my bridge and it's fine, so it leads me to think it was just the string. A few days ago, my EB Cobalt high E snapped during a bend only after a week or so. Dunlops are a company I've never had a problem with though.

Regular XL's seem to hold their tone longer for me. Still, NYXL's sound and feel good.

What even is it that diminishes a string's tone?
Is it the corrosion of the outer-wrap, or is it an equal combination of the corrosion and also the aging/stressing of the integrity/elasticity of the core?

To my ears they all (boomers, slinkies, xl) lose that brand new sound after only a few hours, and then they still sound great for a few more, then there isn't really much noticed decline until they actually start looking dull with light corrosion. (takes months at least in my sweatless climate-controlled clean hand paradise lol)
This has always made me think that the brand-new sound has more to do with the elasticity of the fresh metal.

Yeah I've tried Elixir nanos, thought they sounded good but slightly compressed in spectrum, didn't hang with them long enough to evaluate aging, but to me they never had the zing in the first place so maybe that's why they don't lose it. (?)
