So pickups for this?

I'd agree. Also a nice set of audio taper pots with a 5-10% tolerance, wired up 50s style, so clean to mean is at your fingertips, keeping with the theme of the music you're going for with this one. Think of Pete and Jimmy turning down to get those sweet clean sounds, they weren't stomping on pedals and changing channels ;).
Oooh - that's a good idea!!!

Don't want to lock into that extreme of a focus

Think Whole Lotta's playing AC/DC vs High Voltage playing Led Zeppelin

Wait...are you suggesting the High Voltage set can't do Zeppelin?

The DCR at 7.7K (neck) and 8.6K (bridge) puts them in "barely overwound PAF" territory, but the bridge pickup on the HV set actually uses an "aged" (i.e. degaussed) magnet to dial things back a bit.

The biggest difference between Page and Young was how they set up their amps. Both were playing PAF style pickups and later T-tops through Marshalls.

I bet I could make the High Voltage set to sound like either one with 2 twists of a knob or a simple EQ pedal.

OK - interesting.

Still, no one has said anything that makes me go "Oooh - maybe I should get those instead of Whole Lotta's"
- At best I might look into the Saturday Night's...

You know, looking at the specs, of the WL, SN, and HV...

Mag: A5, A4, A2
Hotness: Hottest, middle, least hot
EQ curve: classic, more highs, less highs

The Whole Lotta just reads like I'd like for this guitar as well. But I can see how any would do the job. And I get the High Voltage suggestions...

i have two sets of sns. they are good pups. i have a set in a prs se and they sound great, well matched, good clean and dirty tones in all positions. i have a neck paired with a jb in a telegib type thing, and the other bridge pup paired with some homemade strat pups in a hss strat. less scooped than a typical a5 pup and not as round/warm as a typical a2.

My favorite all around pair for the requested music is a Bare Knuckle Black Dog bridge with a 59/A4 neck. The WLH bridge is very similar to the BK, but a little hotter and darker. (I've never tried the SNS set.)

Any of the 3 will do what you want. What does the guitar need?

An owner with better chops!

And that is always a good question. Less what it needs than what I want. But the current pickups have some, shall we say, less than attractive qualities.

OK, what is a less attractive quality? Not enough power? Microphonic?

Man, can't I just jones for different pickups? LOL

Bass is a touch soft. Kinda fizzy, flatter EQ than I like. Could be a little hotter. Thin sounding? They are not horrible, but keep in mind most of my guitars are Distortions, SuperD's, Pearly Gates, Customs, etc.

Certainly...we all do. But you have a great chance of just making a sideways step if you can't articulate where you are and where you want to be. Hoping for 'more better' than you have now is unlikely when just picking something different.
