I haven't heard much of anything about them since they released. Only found one short clip on Youtube, and it does not really showcase much. Anyone had any experience with them yet?

"Big flop" seems a bit premature. Are they becoming deeply discounted or is the used market overflowing with them or something?

The fact that they only offer it in double cream tells me that product is probably more about asserting their trademark than catering to market demand.

The 36th took off when it was first released. Everybody and their brother was posting video reviews on Youtube, many threads were going on for pages and pages in most of the major guitar forums, etc etc. There hasn't been a peep about the PAF 59. Makes me think that the early purchasers are not impressed.

In my opinion there's nothing vintage about their products and it's apparent in the sound of them. The specs and materials also confirms it.

The funny thing is if you read the blurb on the DMZ website it sounds like they are trying to say that all "real" PAF® had Double Cream™ bobbins.

I thought the PAF 59 was the best attempt DiMarzio has done at a "vintage" pickup. I wouldn't trade Seths or Ants for them, but I have a set in a Les Paul and they sound well enough.

Like what? The recipe is your basic PAF formula and sounds like you would expect. Sort of like pizza, it is all sauce and cheese, just a little different

It's worth noting that even the DiMarzio 36th Anniversary, which was supposed to be a "vintage" themed "PAF", featured Airbucker™ technology as well as enhanced ferrous bobbins. DiMarzio hates vintage, despite the fact that they've trademarked the double cream exposed bobbin and trademarked the term "PAF". They don't want to be vintage, and they don't want to let you be vintage, either. They're just being dicks.

You guys take stuff way too seriously.

I am sure DiMarzio does not hate vintage. The aftermarket pickup history is barely fifty years old, and companies that want to be around in another fifty years will need to respond to market trends. Nostalgic tones are again popular again, and DiMarzio is simply offering they have been lacking.

I've never really tried a real vintage PAF, TBH, but I think the PAF 36th Anni neck sounds fantastic. I definitely hear more similarities between it and Burstbucker Pro and Duncan '59 and vintage-voiced pickups than to something like a Crunch Lab or Dominion or anything that's modern-voiced.

No worries. Most people haven't. Seths are the real deal. Pearly gates and 59s are close enough unless you're a purist and won't tolerate potting and polished magnets.

Honestly, it's about playing. Chasing tone is either a diversion or an excuse.

...and if high gain is your bag, why should you care about vintage spec pickups (as if there was a spec)?

Watch any great player on YouTube (e.g. Pete Thorn) and see how they make anything sound great.

As Clapton says, "tone is in the trousers".
