So What Exactly Happens when you Power a Pedal the Wrong Way

I used 9DCV power to run my Boss CH-1 and the next thing I know, it doesn't work! I'm an idiot! This isn't my first time! :smack:

Please, someone tell me what really happens to the pedal and how to fix it (if I can!)...

Thanks.

are you sure the polarity was correct? some adapters have their Plus and Minus opposite of what your pedal calls for- and DC usually MUST retain correct polarity-check it out- have you tried putting a battery back in and see if the pedal still works?

Re: So What Exactly Happens when you Power a Pedal the Wrong Way

If you use the wrong polarity adapter, you either blow the "safety" diode in the power circuit (if it has one) or you toast all of the IC chips in the pedal.

Try Marvar's advice at try battery power before you give up hope.

1) Electronic devices are meant for a specific polarity and voltage input power. NEVER run the wrong stuff. It breaks things and voids warranties.
2) What could happen: burned out components (capacitors/transistors/tubes).
3) How to fix it: first, get the right adapter. It the pedal works, you're lucky. If it still doesn't work, take it to an electronics repair shop and hope it don't cost more to fix it than to buy another.

Good luck!

9 times out of 10 you blow the diode out in the power supply....It's there to save the rest of the pedal...

Re: So What Exactly Happens when you Power a Pedal the Wrong Way

Thanks for the replies...so you mention an electronics repair shop...are there any well known places all over the place or do I have to look for a specialist?

Re: So What Exactly Happens when you Power a Pedal the Wrong Way

hmm... often ive had the polarity wrong on my dc adaptor when ive plugged pedals into it.. and nothings happened... was i just lucky? oddly enough, that adaptor is now broken...

Re: So What Exactly Happens when you Power a Pedal the Wrong Way

Sometimes the adapter will die when used incorrectly rather than the pedal. I killer my Tonebone's adapter by inadvertently using it on another pedal. Good thing, I'd hate to kill my pedals! :)

Where are you located? I might be able to look at it for you depending on what side of the world you're on.

wat happens if u blow the power supply
cos i think thats wat happened to my dads and he bought a new one ($50 AUS) total rip off

All the way over in the Pacific Northwest...right next to Seattle. Thanks for the concern and generosity. :)

Re: So What Exactly Happens when you Power a Pedal the Wrong Way

If you want to take a gamble on the price of shipping both ways, I'd be happy to take a look at it for you. It may be something simple, but since its a chorus pedal, its possible that it may have some proprietary chips in it.

Just PM me if you're interested, and I'll PM you back my addy.

Artie

Now where else can you hang out and get offers like that?

This is a great place.

Kudos, Artie.
