So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

Re: So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

I just put an A8 in a Pearly Gates bridge in my Les Paul studio. I'd say it upped the output by at least 10%. What I was looking for, more than output though, was more lows which it certainly delivered. More lows, more low mids and ever so slightly warmer upper mids and highs. I'm very pleased with the tonal balance.

I wouldn't call the attack extremely tight but more so than a stock A2 PG. Things still clean up nicely when rolling back the volume. Well worth the price of the swap!!

Re: So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

almost all pickups, but the pickups in which the alnico 8 staid was the jazz neck (goes in the bridge and neck position: love it!). jb, jb/fullshred hybrid, patb1/patb2 hybrid, patb2/fullshred hybrid.

Re: So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

A Custom 5, which stopped being a 5, it "opened up" the tone. Became very clear, articulate, it was used for heavy riffing. It added a bit of power and atack, not as huge a difference that I exected though.
On an ESP bridge that was installed on an LTD. Grrreat sound, I loved the output, meat and power that delivered. It was an ESP pup with a thin magnet not the double thick, I then tried on the neck ESP and it did not work as good.
On Infinity IBNZ pickups, which looked like ceramic mags, but not sure, the A8 helped a lot by adding a bit of meat to the tone. Didn't add power here, or very little.
On a Skaterbrane hand wound PAF, it sounds too bright and the original UOA5 is going back in there.

Re: So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

'59b, JazzB, Custom, '59/Custom Hybrid, 498T, '57 Classic Plus.

It sounded excellent in all of them but the JazzB, which provoked me ear fatigue due to its inherent sharp pick attack. Solved the issue using an A2 mag, which BTW should be the Jazz set stock magnet, NOT the A5, if you ask me.

HTH,

Just the JB. But I really like it. It's in a Cadillac.

For the record, I like the JB is superstrats with Floyds. But not LP's so much.

Re: So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

'59B, PGB, 498T, 490T, C5, and in bridge P-90's as an A8/A4. It brought warmth, mids, and output. In most of these the A8 was eventually replaced by an UOA5 for a more vintage feel. A8's worked well in everything I put them in and most players would have left them in. UOA5's are slightly warmer, lower output, and have a more complex, dynamic tone. Like an A2 with more treble. That usually won out.

HTH,

I have a jazz in stock form so the AII will bring it to a more "APHII pro" tone?

Re: So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

Custom and Phat Cat. The Phat Cat had an A2 in with it as well. I tried neither stock to start with, so I couldn't tell you the difference. haha. I recently tried an A5 with the A8 with the Phat Cat though, and didn't like it at all. Thinned it out a ton, killed the girth.

Re: So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

custom, jb, distortion, and custom/jb hybrid

To me its a toss up between the custom/jb hybrid and the C8. Very similar just a tad different. I chose the hybrid A8 in my #1 les paul but would be happy with the C8

least favorite was actually the distortion. I think that pickup only works with the big ceramic mag. others would argue i'm sure.

Jb was cool with A8 but a little too much for me. I wanted to shut it up sometimes

I agree about the distortion

Re: So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

A HB103, a JB (almost the same thing) and a Screamin' Demon.

Added balls and heat in all of them. It's currently on the HB103 bridge, in a Squier Strat I've got, 500k volume and no tone pot.
Sounds freakin' BRUTAL.

I loved it in the Demon as well, but I like the open, crisp character of the Demon and the A8 took a bit away from it.

Re: So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

Custom 5 and BG Hellabucker. I don't care for any of the Customs, but with the a8, it's a flabby mid overkill (like the Alternative 8). Then again, unlike some metal doodz, I never have a problem with turning the mid knob on my amp up.

The Hellabucker was great with the 8; it was sort of the midpoint between the stock A5 and a ceramic (a little heavier, a little boosted, more harmonics). More output without the unbending feeling you can get from playing leads with a ceramic pickup. I like playing metal rhythm, so right now I've got the ceramic in there.

Hmm. Doesnt sound like my experience with that pickup at all. One man's trash is another man's gold...

Maybe you should try turning your mid knob down

Re: So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

a JB, a Custom, a C/JB hybrid, a JB/C hybrid, a Full Shred.

in the FS, it just didn't work out well. in the others, it took everything up a notch. lows, mids, highs, output. used the JB8 and the C8 the most. gave me ear fatigue and ended up putting everything back to stock. nothing wrong with it worked in them (outside of the FS), they just weren't for me.

The APH and the Jazz, even with the same A2 magnet, are tonal polar opposites:

The APH is smooth and sirupy, the Jazz is sharp and articulate.

If you ask me, an A2 modded Jazz set sounds like what I imagine an original PAF set should've sounded when it was brand new in 1959.

HTH,

Re: So what pickups have everybody put an Alnico 8 in?

I've only put one in a '59/custom hybrid. I also used a row of hex screws as well, and it Djents like nothing else, like to the point I'm considering a row of invader screws. I also use a Alt. 8 often.

did you like the A8 in the hybrid?

anybody like to compare that one with the C8?

I do like the over all EQ of the pickup, but I think the hex screws make it a little to thin. Like there is plenty of bass and mids, but it just doesn't have very much girth. I'm using it in a maple neck-through guitar though.
