So, what to practice every day?

Re: So, what to practice every day?

thanks for the tip jefferson, by diatonic youy mean adding which notes exactly? 6th(minor/major) and 9th maybe?

Re: So, what to practice every day?

Yeah, the minor 6th and the major 2nd/9th (to go from minor pentatonic to minor). For each set of 2 scales here, the first one is the pentatonic and the second is the same fingering with the other 2 notes added. Just pick one note at a time from the diatonic fingering and add it to the pentatonic fingering while improvising over some chords to get a feel for where it works and where it doesnt. Once you are satisfied with that note, add another one.

I suggest starting by adding the 2 on the high e string in minor pentatonic, then the 6 on the b string.

If any of this isn't clear, tell me and i'll try to explain it better.

Minor Pentatonic
|-----|--1--|-----|-----|--3--|-----|

|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|--6--|-----|
|-----|--1--|-----|--2--|--3--|-----|
*note the 2nd on the 3rd and 4th strings is the same note, just a different way to finger it. pick the one you like best.

Re: So, what to practice every day?

Advanced Modern Rock Guitar Improvisation by Jon Finn is a pretty good book that talks about this in the "Modes for Morons" section. The way he talks about it is he adds 2 notes to the minor pentatonic fingering on the b and high e strings. Depending on which 2 you add, you can get an aeolian, dorian, or phrygian sound. One cool thing is that these 3 modes all contain the minor pentatonic scale, and ionian and mixolydian contain the major pentatonic scale.

90% of learning how to use new scales on the guitar is just using them over different chords to learn their sound. Ear training is really the key here. Adding the notes one at a time to pentatonic scales that your ear is already trained for is just a way to more efficiently train your ear.

Re: So, what to practice every day?

and remember that scales are just like guidelines, and considering im still kinda a noob i cant stress this enough!! you can play whatever you want when you're soloing, you can use chromatics or out of tune bends or play notes that have nothing to do with it, you can add major thirds in a minor solo (as long as you use them as passing tones), etc...there's no rulebook to how to solo or even how to play....nobody ever told the greats what to do...learning the modes and learning some exotic scales is just about 20% of what makes a great guitarist great

Re: So, what to practice every day?

jefferson that was really useful, thank you, i actually use aeolian sometimes, but im kind of a stranger to all the other modes

like someone said over there, its all about the ear and how it sounds to you...
BUT i really could use some guidelines and example licks to help. (especially on the use of the "new" notes, not the pentatonics.)

Aeolian is just the minor scale....

play different melodic patterns in the modes...pick up a good guitar soloing book as mentioned previously. It will help a lot if you follow it.
