The Live Wires are actually a fairly clever idea - GC probably takes a loss on them, but it gets people in the store whenever their cable busts (I believe you call that a "loss leader" in retail, no?)

Good info re. the capacitance Evan.

IMO, the best cables are the ones with the lowest distributed capacitance. Our experience bench-testing a bunch of cables is that standard Mogami cable has very low capacitance. Of all the cables we tested, the one with the highest capacitance was Monster. The effect of high distributed capacitance is reduced treble response. Ironically, Monster has turned this into a marketing "feature" by labeling these cables "Jazz" for the player who wants to sound like they have their tone control rolled off.

...and let's be fair. Didn't some tube company "rate" their tubes using the general benchmark of how crappy their output was?

Those Satanic ****s in Marketing have infiltrated the ranks of every good and decent company and gotten their meathooks into perfectly good workers and turned them into their Minions to serve their evil Lord and Master for all eternity....

Wow... and I thought that THIS LITTLE DETAIL was enough of a reason to not use Monster.

I used to work at GC. We did not require a receipt for Monster exchanges, or any other cable with a Lifetime Warranty.

Personally I use Planet Waves Cables. They cost less and sound the same and are absolutely bulletproof.

Little story: At GC we sold about 5 Planet Waves cables to every 1 monster cable we sold. At the end of the day we'd sell maybe 10 PWs and 2 or 3 monters. In the year that I was there I'd get about 4 or 5 Monster cables returned per week because they broke and the owner wanted to exercise the warranty. In that same year I only saw TWO Planet Waves cables come back for the same reason.

....last I checked...and it was about two years ago because I picked up a Planet Waves cable for about $5 at a local chain stores "Warehouse Sale"....the Planet Waves cables had to be returned to the company and NOT to the point of sale for an exchange.

If Planet Waves cables were coming back it seems like they would be doing so not becuase of increased quality of the product but that the purchasers know how to read.

....that is unless Planet Waves changed their policy.

Maybe Guitar Center just operated differently than this other chain store... we were always told to treat PW's and Monsters the same when it came to returns/exchanges. I dont know how other companies, or even other GC's dealt with it, but thats just what happened on my end of the band.

As far as PW cables coming back, as salesmen in my dpartment we made it a point to illustrate the fact that PW also had the Lifetime warranty that monster did because you're right, you'd be surprised how many Guitar Center shoppers seem to be selectively illiterate. :laugh2: This way at least they'd be informed (somewhat) and they cant say we never told them about it. In any case, the fact is that PW's almost never came back, when Monsters came back on an almost daily basis.

And as far as personal experience goes, I've had 5 or 6 Monsters fail on me before I switched to PW. I treat it with the same care (or lack of it, in some cases) that I did the monster and it hasnt broken on me yet.

Re: So where do I unload this stupid Monster Cable?

I use Monster Cables exclusively. Whenever one of the tips gets bent or whatever, I simply take it back to GC and exchange it. No receipt required.
