I love the Warmoth Boatneck contour. Two of my guitars have a neck with that profile. Super comfortable for me. My SG Jr. has a 60's Slim profile but there's enough shoulder where it's still comfortable. My Kramer has almost a D shape with a flatter back. It's borderline too thin but I can manage. By far, fatter necks are my preference.

I'm looking at a getting one of those next month. What was your take on it? I have pretty big hands so a fat neck is not much of a deterrent for me. Just curious on your thoughts regarding that particular neck.

I use to hate fat necks...until I finished a Tele project that used vintage fat neck (Warmoth "Boatneck".) Now I don't play my thin necks (Warmoth "Standard Thin") because of how much I like that Vintage Tele.

I like fat necks. My current #1 is a Gibson SG Robot. Prior to that it was my Les Paul Trad. I primarily used LTDS prior to buying a Gibson and the necks were decent on those for the most part. Smaller than the Gibson but not wizard thin either. What I dislike about most LTDS is the 1 5/8 nut width. I ended up with an ESP M-II that had a 1 11/16 width, although added width was nice it was just too thin for me (definitely thinner than the H and MH models). In the end I traded the ESP for the SG Robot based partly on the fact that it had the 50s neck, which I vastly prefer to the 60s.

I used to hate the fat '59 necks on my LP Vintage Mahogany and Traditional. Now that I have one with a thinner neck, I miss the '59 neck.

A modern Strat or SuperStrat has a supermodel neck, there is nothing better. I've played some Gibsons from the '80s or earlier that had virtual baseball bat necks compared to more recent ones, and it simply isn't my thing. Same for the Jeff Beck Strat (even the latest versions)----simply doesn't do it for me. I don't need giant strings for good tone or feel, either. I think 10s are optimum. Some of the biggest, meanest, heaviest tones ever recorded were with 9s, even though many claim they can't get "their"
sound without telephone wires on their guitars, etc. It's more of a macho thing, and that's fine if it inspires you.
Of all the Superstrats, a nice Jackson/Charvel or ESP/LTD is at the God level for me. I like some Ibanez necks also, but not the original Wizard, which was too thin, especially when paired with a thin S body. Give me a Wizard II or JEM neck, and you won't hear me complain. :cool2:

I like Allparts necks and used a SMNF-Fat on my latest Strat build. Perfect!!!
When I next build a Tele, I'll be using the TMO-Fat for the neck.
I haven't played a real Fender that I've even considered owning in more than 20 years
mostly because of the neck shapes.

I'm not a fan of thin necks like a lot of shred sticks have, and my hands and fingers are too small for really fat necks. I can manage slightly thinner than a Fender modern neck up to Gibson 50's profile, but I find Gibson 60's slim taper to be the most comfortable. I really wanted an Ibanez Fireman, particularly the red one with the Injector pups, but Paul Gilbert has ridiculously huge hands, and even though the red model's neck is thinner than the previous natural HSH model, it's still thicker than a 59 neck

Well I got a new Richie Kotzen tele today and OMG the neck on this thing is massive. It's a good thing I have big hands. I'm actually pretty surprised they didn't scale it down for the consumer market because this thing is so fat it might kinda limit its market. After a couple of hours it's starting to feel natural but definitely took some getting used to. I took a chance and bought it without playing it since no shop around me had one to try. No regrets. I love it.
Maybe tomorrow i'll post a NGD thread.
