So you take lessons?

Re: So you take lessons?

i started taking lessons about 10-11 months ago... had a great teacher - would mix in theory as well as just songs that *I liked*... and would apply the theory as necessary... and about 4 months ago had to switch instructors since my first teacher moved to LA (to give a shot at pursuing a music career)... so i was a bit bummed since he was a great teacher and i had a good rapport with him

but found a new teacher about 3 months ago (he's actually a working musician, and used to be in a somewhat well known Detroit band, and now in another great Detroit band)... a bit less theory but thrown in there for good measure every once in a while... so still a good balance... but he's really big on learning songs, ones that I *like* but that also at the same time challenge me and teach me new techniques... and we'll mix it up between lead techniques one week, and then some rhythm stuff the next... and probably most important of all - he's really big on developing my ear - knowing what sounds good and recognising notes and chords is a huge plus is his opinion and i agree... and one more thing is he'll really take notice and give me feedback on my technique and hand position... which is probably a hard thing to really notice and/or fix when you are learning on your own (unless playing in a front of a mirror ;-) )...

as i get more lesson time with him, i'm getting more and more comfortable and so far it's been working out great!!... after 11 months or so (3 months with the new guy)... i'm progressing fairly well (although admittedly i need to practice more often/regularly... which i'm consicously doing more so now)...

i guess it's about finding a teacher you connect with... someone that you feel comfortable with and offers you the right balance between theory, technique and just playing/learning songs and developing your ear... i can't stress that enough... developing a good ear - at least for me - is key...

cheers

Re: So you take lessons?

Nothing wrong in learning the language, or basics in music!
Kills nothing....I have forgotten so much that I actually need to dust off some stuff again...lol
You never stop practising or learning new stuff, if not...then you are just standing still and needs to move again!
As mentioned....use your ear, play all kinds of stuff that you normally do not use...
Play in bands, as many as humanly possible at a certain point:D
