So you want a hot-rodded humbucker set.

I am a Les Paul player, and I've always been just a tad jealouse of not being able to use Duncan's hot-rodded humbucker set (Jazz/JB).

Part of it being that the set sounds so damn good in ash/alder bodied superstrats. Part of it being Seymour's favorite set.

And the humbucker originated in Les Pauls dagnabit! What are we singlecut players left with for pure Duncan sweetness? '59n/Custom set? '59/Hybrid set? Slash set?

A month ago, I installed a DiMarzio Norton in my Ibanez bridge and an Air Norton in the neck. It sounded good...but not great.

It needed some Seymourizing.
So I threw a '59n in the mix...and now it's a rock machine.

Any singlecut player who's looking for sweet solo tones, and tightness and chunk in their rhythm playing should give the SD '59/DMZ Norton set a whirl. They complement each other amazingly well.

Custom/PG

Or if you're down with may swapping, C8/PG

I've never owned a Custom Sh/TB-5, but I actually wonder how it compares to the Norton.
It's be cool to hear them both in a blind test out of a Les Paul.

From specs alone, it looks like the Norton is a lot closer to a '59/Custom hybrid both in output and EQ.

Though, I know for sure a new Norton is a whole lot cheaper than either Duncan, so I'm not complaining :-]

Why can't you put the Jazz/JB (Duncan's hot rodded set) in your LP, or any single cutaway? Did Randy Rhodes do something wrong putting that set in Flying Vs? Randy Rhodes did have a trem on his Vs. So you may have to add a trem to your LP, but you can get that same tone. Just run it through a Marshall loud w/distortion pedal.

I dunno it is man...but Superstrats (alder) are just a win for the Jazz/JB.
But, I don't generally like the feel of trems, and I like stratocasters even less, so getting another one is out.
It's not really a big deal, as there are plenty of other options. I'm just peeved THE "hot-rodded" humbucker set is pretty much designated for a very select group of guitars.

Something about the girth of a LP just destroys the properties of a JB for me. It may be the mahogany or basswood or similar tonewood. It just doesn't work. People have described it to be shrill and I tend to agree. In a S-S-H Strat though? Forget about it, it's amazing.
