socially acceptable to add to other's Soundclouds?

Nerdy Nerd
I'm about ready to stick my recording computer up and make it go. How do the clipmasters here feel about having your playaround tracks being used for tracking other tracks?

I tend to write additively, building on something that's already there. There's lots and lots of noodlings laying around and I think it'd be fun to do some backings or supports to some of these.

Of course I would ASK first, but aside from the personal permission, would it seem...presumptuous or rude to 3rd party listeners?

Odd question, but sometimes these social morays wouldn't hurt to be touched on.

I've seen others on YouTube do it all the time; usually, the paradigm is "ask permission, and give credit (with a link back to the original)".

I usually have a few tracks posted at any given time. Some of these are "finished" and intended to represent my output. Others are (conspicuously) unfinished, works in progress.

Right now, I am conducting an e-overdubbing project with a former bandmate. Hence, I have a number of unfinished, backing track types files posted for him to practice/compose to. I cannot physically prevent anyone jamming along to my files. I am unlikely to consent to pieces intended for this project.

PROPOSAL
If you have something in particular that you would like to play over, put out a request for it. Somebody might be feeling generous enough to donate a backing track.

there are a lot of backing tracks you can buy out there, but ya getting permission is the rule of thumb. lots would be stoked whether you ask or not though!

Re: socially acceptable to add to other's Soundclouds?

I'm really interested in doing collaborative music, so I thought it'd be fun to apply some building blocks to other people's ideas to see what could be built off of it, as they're sort of out there in the public and momentum for momentum's sake can drive creativity as well as anything else. It might be a better idea to simply start from scratch, however; people are a little more protective of their instrumental doodles than I thought they would be. Thanks for the input, all.

Re: socially acceptable to add to other's Soundclouds?

FWIW I think you should feel free to use anyones work, cut it up, sample it, and throw it into whatever dubstep remix or other monstrosity you feel like. No one should say no to extra exposure. As long as you're crediting and linking I'd personally not even care if I were asked or not

The bear has a point. If you "borrow" somebody else's backing track, do something genuinely creative with it then present your work to the originator, you are far more likely to get approval - especially if you offer proper composer credit and/or money.
