Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

Would a soldano hot mod work in a marshall 2555?
I see the list of the amps that the mod goes with, but I can't understand why you couldnt use it with a 2555?
Is the hot mod "mod" basically like putting an OD pedal in front of the amp to goose it a bit?

Re: Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

Actually, I have no idea what the Hot-Mod REALLY does to an amp.

At first, I thought it added another gain stage; but a friend of mine said that it pushed the front of the amp harder (like an OD pedal, I guess).

Someone should chime in, explaining what it really does.

Re: Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

Im not sure, it seems pretty similar to running an OD in front of the amp but ads for it say its another gain stage which running an OD basically is

Re: Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

The Hot Mod allows you to replace a 12AX7 preamp tube with a 6KII tube. It adds a ton of preamp gain. Sounds really good in a Marshall JCM 800 2203/2204, especially if your in to a Zakk kind of tone. The Hot Mod does not work in a lot of amps. Not sure if it would work in yours, though it wouldn't hurt anything if it didn't.

Re: Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

The Jubilee already has an extra gain stage similar to what the Hot Mod is designed to do, in it's preamp. The Hot Mod is designed to add an extra pre-amp gain stage to 2203 type, JMP and/or JCM 800 amps.

Re: Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

Doesn't the Jub use diode clipping to get some distortion?

One thing, the gain of an older master volume Marshall using a Hot Mod is FAR MORE than what a stock Jubilee puts out. Their not even close.

Re: Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

I agree based off of the assumption of playing a jubilee and calling it more of a med-gain amp. Its more warm than cutting and bitting.

Re: Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

I dont think I am going to buy a hot mod since I dont know if it would work in my jubilee based on that list...but at the same time I dont see why it wouldnt work in the amp.

Re: Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

The Jubilee isn't a good canidate for this type of mod, because the LED clip stage is right where you would want to put the extra gain stage, coming off, and intergated with, the V1B preamp tube. V2 also has the FX loop in the middle of it.

If you want to up the preamp gain of a Jubilee, a good overdrive unit in front, or better yet in the FX loop, is a way better way to go.

The jubilee isn't super high gain, although it has plenty for me, in part because it's designed to place some added emphasis on the EL34 power amp being pushed hard.

Re: Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

Thanks for the info - it was something that I was curious about since I didnt know why I couldnt do it/or why it wasnt on that list of amps to use it with.

Re: Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

OK. I have to ask. Why would I do this as opposed for a full plate voltage pedal in front of the amp? Would this not give me another gain stage as well? Cheaper and easier to control it seems to me. What am I missing?

Re: Soldano Hot mod/jubilee

Just take a Jubilee, put in JJ E-34L's and GT12AX7C's or Tungsols, then bias it on the hot side, and you won't need anything. Mine has as much gain as a 5150. Even with the gain on 8, it's got tight low end chunk and singing sustain.

One piece of gear I HIGHLY recommend every Jubilee or FX loop Marshall owner has is an Alesis Nanoverb. It's the best $50-$100 you'll ever spend for your amp. I don't even use my Jubilee without it. It's got an input level, output level, mix, rotary dial, and FX intensity knob. So, you can dial in the amp, then use it as a fine tuner. You'll be able to mix in a nice reverb, but also use all the other knobs to dial in the amp. Trust me on this one....just buy one. It suits the Jubilee perfectly, and you can also use it on DSL's or TSL's to fine tune it.

You're missing the fact that you have to tote the pedal around and locate a power source for it. You don't have to do that with the HotMod. You just get more gain on tap. Great mod for JCM-800's with a master volume.
