Soldano Hot Rod 25 Demo + Diezel D-Moll Demo + Morris Grinder Demo (Past-Due NAD's)

Re: Soldano Hot Rod 25 Demo + Diezel D-Moll Demo + Morris Grinder Demo (Past-Due NAD'

Well you could have just said that instead of insulting me.

OK, I admit I thought you were just up to your old ways. However, I'll give you a chance and see if we can get off on a better start this time. My apologies for being presumptuous and rude. Cool?

OK, so in not so much detail, I'm going to get a tweaked Decatone. I'll say nothing more because I think my idea is awesome and I don't want anyone to copy it until I make it famous.

Is that the factory tolex? It looks like an aftermarket cab though. If it is stock then that's pretty cool.

I cut the combo down to make it a head, painted it with plastic primer, then purple enamel.

That's pretty cool. How did you get that texture?

That's the original tolex (faux-lex?) covering. The plastic primer bonds to that, then the paint goes on top.

That's cool. I wouldn't have thought to do something like that. I would have just stripped the cab and put new tolex. Someone tell me though, why not use leather? I know it costs, but tolex costs money too. We have leather wallets, holsters, gloves, etc... Wouldn't leather make a durable and vintagey looking head cab covering? Mesa uses leather corners and I like the look of their amps.

I liked the Morris the best. It sounds like it has good sustain and touch sensitivity. It has a classic sound that doesn't sound strained. The diesel is a little bright with a bridge humbucker, but it sounds like it pretty much plays itself due to the amount of sustain it has. I didn't care for the Diesel neck tone though it's a bit dark.

Ten years ago the SLO wasn't $4200 so maybe it wasn't necessary at the time. Oh man, the Hot Rod 25 IS a 25w SLO. I owned a 2008 SLO so I know the SLO very well, and I can tell you that the HR25 is the SLO. If you've played the Hot Rod 50 or 100 AND and SLO, then you know there huge similarities but also differences. To me, the HR25 leans toward the SLO more than the Hot Rod 50/100. It needs a bit of volume to get THE tone though. Even though it's 25w, it's pretty loud and doesn't necessarily give up the goods until it's beyond bedroom volume. I think my demo kind of does a good job of showing it at low volume. It's designed with a dual 5881 power section operating at low plate voltages. My Diezel D-Moll is 100 KILLER watts and I think it gets better low volume tone than the HR25. However, if you can get the volume up just past conversation level, it really blossoms into SLO territory without leaving dead rodents and small critters dead on your doorstep. Man the SLO is 100 watts of Marshall wattage. Unlike the Decatone which is pretty tame for a 100w amp. It's great that they make the HR25 because you can capture all of that.

Hi Percival,

thanks for that enlightening writeup. When the HR25 was first announced I peed my pants a little, I was that happy about it. Probably won't have he funds to buy one any time soon, but that's definitely something I want to have. The fact that you say it's closer to the SLO is icing on the cake.

Cheers.

Morris amps are definitely undiscovered gold. The man is among the best amp builders there are. He has a great ear and plays pretty well himself. The Morris is truly an amazing amp. My model, the Grinder, has the most amazing feel and tone. I have yet to be able to demonstrate that with any integrity in a recording.

There are no good audio demos or videos of it. What I've done doesn't do it justice either, but at least it give you an idea of what it sounds like in the hands of an amateur home player. It's not talked about very much and they are rare to come by used, but that's great for people who own them. I hope Mike always keeps them in his line up at that price.

I hope he might consider lowering the price a tad lol.

Thanks again Percy.

I don't know who Percy is, unless you are referring to me as someone from King Arthur or Greek myth, but $1999 would be a very attractive price.

I heard somewhere your name was Percival.... Am I mistaken?

Indeed you are mistaken. That's the thing about hearsay, it's never reliable. That is not my name.
