Re: Soldano SLO or JCM800???

Guys who can really give you adive here, would love to know what kind of noise you would like to make with those toys, they are both suited for 80s stuff, but I would guess SLO is more versitile, what are you in to?

Re: Soldano SLO or JCM800???

Its kind of a hard call, they are both excellent amps, but different. The best thing you can do is go plug into both and see what works for you. As far as build quality I think the Soldano will probably be better made, but the 800's are legendary..... more of a one trick pony than the slo is.

Re: Soldano SLO or JCM800???

Niko, if that's your type of sound I think you would be happy with either. I had a JCM800 50 watt in the 80s and it smoked. I've never had a Soldano, but I knew someone who did (really really cool), and the Soldano mod on my Vox Valvetronix is my favorite model. I would venture to say that the Marshall will retain value more than the Soldano, but like anything, who knows what the future holds.

as far as build quality SLOs are probably the best amps made. marshalls? not so much.

dude play both amps and see which you like better. they are both great and have the 80's metal tones oozing out of them.

Re: Soldano SLO or JCM800???

SLO any day. They do EVERYTHING and excell. Great friggen built amps too. From cleans, to BLUES (Clapton, Buddy Guy, Warren Haynes and SRV used them at some time during their career) zep and AC/DC classic rock tones to brown sounds, to 80s metal, to higher gain. Some of the best amps, if not BEST out there. Amazing stuff.

Re: Soldano SLO or JCM800???

tks for rthe answers guuys! Ok, i'm gonna add some more info here..
My axes are: 2 Les Pauls.
1 loaded with Duncan Custom bridge and Pearly Gates neck
2d loaded wirth Custom custom (sh-11) bridge and Alnico II Pro neck

And i'm into Rock, Hard Rock, and Punk. (some influences: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Guns N' Roses, Bad Religion)

However sometimes I just, like more dist. (heavy stuff) , and on the other hand, sometimes I'm more focused on good clean tones.

rtks fellows!!

From that, I'd say the slo sounds like the ticket. The slo is gonna have more gain on tap than a stock jcm800. If it was me and money wasn't an issue, I'd get the slo.

Re: Soldano SLO or JCM800???

The SLO is the more versatile amp, with better cleans. That's one hell of an amp.

Re: Soldano SLO or JCM800???

Man, tough call. I'd try to take both. ;) Then run them at the same time, George Lynch style (he used to do this in the later Dokken years and in early Lynch Mob).

Re: Soldano SLO or JCM800???

I own the best JCM 800 that you can get, a 1981 2204. Although it sounds amazing and I will never sell it, I know that the Soldano is a better amp overall. It is better made, has much more gain on tap, and is an all around more versatile amp. The 100 watt Soldano SLO's also cost a LOT more than JCM 800s last time I checked though.

Re: Soldano SLO or JCM800???

SLO will give you a lot more versatility, sounds amazing, and is a better choice if you are going to go with one amp. Having said that nothing sounds like a Marshall. But you will have to compromise on clean sounds, get a pedal for extra gain, no effects loop, etc, etc.

If I can have only one amp and those were the choices it would be the SLO. Of course, I would choose a VHT Pitbull or Bogner Ecstacy instead of a SLO (but that's me).

Re: Soldano SLO or JCM800???

its a tough call indeed. and I have untill saturday to make my decision.
It seams the soldano has more vots here. I'd just like to add one more thing.
I'm a little worried about the slo being too bright. Is that so? couse i'm more on the other side. I like more fat and dark sounds. Is that gonna be an issue with that amp? (if its true, of course) Or it's just an Eq fixable thing?

tks very, very, very much.

He used a Soldano live for the first Lynch Mob tour, not sure about later. The Marshall stacks were just for show, he had a rack with a SLO and his effects behind the Marshall wall.

He also mentioned that back in the Dokken days alot of times the amp he was really playing through was a Randall RG80 combo sitting in a chair behind the wall of Marshalls.

Yeah, I saw the first Mob tour. Great show, and tone. I saw the SLO head sitting there. Wasn't sure if he was running both or not but I did read that he would record that way sometimes. Not all the time and not on every track, but for some rhythm tracks, he would run a SLO and a Marshall at the same time.

Think of the SLO as a better sounding 5150.....same tubes, similar design.
The 800 has a great classic metal sound, but has less gain, so lead tones require an OD pedal.

Re: Soldano SLO or JCM800???

Yeah, I saw the first Mob tour. Great show, and tone.

Yeah, Don who:) Saw them in a club in Wilmington, NC, they all sounded great that night. That album still is one of the standards of guitar tone to me, and yep, he did use Aspen Pittman's purple Superlead head on that disc too. I'm pretty sure he used a DS-1 to push it.

Live he used the SLO and I think he started using Engls somewhere around that time too. The "wall" was just for show, he may have used 1 or 2 of the bottom cabinets.
