Soloing help. URGENT.

Well it seems like, whenever I read a thread about help with improv, you guys just say "Just mess around with the scale until you find something good" (or was this in another forum?)
Well it's hard for me to make anything out of the scales! My Teacher wrote down the whole G Major White Note Scale and i can't seem to get anything good out of it. It sucks especially when someone tells me to jam along with them and I make crap.

I believe that I'll get better with the music i listen to, so are there any artists that are especially talented in guitar "in any genre of music" you'd recommend?

Also, I always have to refer back to the scale sheet when soloing, is there any practices you'd do to be able to remember all the scales (other than just playing them)

what style of music are you looking to play?

i think one way to get a handle on improv soloing is to start at a slow tempo and get yourself a simple chord progression to record over and over and over .... then when you get the progression playing back sing out loud a very simple melody that you make up in your head ... just a handful of notes in a phrase ... listen to the way those notes sound against that progression ... dont make it too fast or too many notes or too long a phrase ... then after you sing it a few times play it on the guitar ... play it a few times in two or three octaves ... play it a bunch of times to really get your phrasing to sound interesting ... then noodle the phrase around a little bit ... add some notes, change the rhythm .. whatever ...

do a few different progressions with a few melodies each ...

as for memorizing the scales, i think the best way to start is to just take it string by string in one position at a time ... worry about connecting postions later after you get good at the positions .. so play the notes on the low e string ... play them a handful of times each ... then add the notes on the a string ... continue til you have all six strings .. remember to play them aascending and descending

tone4days: well, i'm in a punkband, but I don't want to limit my playing just because of that...as for guitar, I'm into surf rock and blues and just basic rock solos...

What are simple chord progressions you'd recommend?

ok - try this .. play Aminor for 4 beats then F for two beats then G for two beats and repeat ad infinitum ... i sugest a slow tempo to start - maybe around 80 beats per minute ... and play eighth note chords if you want a little more 'driving' feel ...

then play with the A minor pentatonic scale ... the notes are A C D E G A ...
