some bass.

Chickenwings

Alnico 6/8
Its not a double bass obviously which is the sound im trying to approximate with the electric but its sounding kinda warm and deep i guess. The tune is "stella by starlight"
Its a warmoth/fender jazz bass, bartolinis and a sansamp direct in. Let me know what you think of the tones and/or playing.

Re: some bass.

I have no complaints about the tone or playing... I just wish it was a liiiiiittle bit louder!

Very groovy track though. :)

Re: some bass.

yeh. i kinda deliberatley mixed it back. I made the recording for a piano player who wants a double bass. I only have electric, so i did this to show him how electric can do the job when necesary and i didint want to scare him with the extra punch presence and thickness the electric has. I'd rather he heard it and said the same as you, rather than thinking it was too loud! lol

Re: some bass.

I think you can still mix it a touch louder...and accomplish the natural double bass tone. throw a little reverb on it though so it breathes a bit better. Also, after you turn it up, if you find it has too much punch and in-your-face-ness, find the frequencies where the string attack is and lower those a bit so it sounds smoother.

Great playing btw.

Re: some bass.

When I'm going for a more mellow jazzy sound on my electric, I play close to the neck, because that's where many jazz players are working their pizzacato hands on the upright bass.

Re: some bass.

Sounds sweet. I love that hiss of the brushes too. Also that .gif in your signature makes me crack up every time.

Re: some bass.

Nice smooth tones there.

One trick I used to do to emulate an upright was to use the pads of my fingers and brush the string from the top closer to the neck join and lay the pad on my palm just behind the top of the saddles, I'd also slide the notes a lot more to try and emulate the slurs.

Re: some bass.

im kinda stuck with a nail/pad combination sound because i play a lot of classical guitar gigs and playing bass is really a part time occupation for me. I have acrylic nails cos im always breaking the natural ones.

Re: some bass.

Maybe try using the lower part of your thumb pad, just about the join then ?
