Some days I play great, Some days I suck

Re: Some days I play great, Some days I suck

I actually find that I play the best when I'm pretty tired... not exausted, but tired.

I'm too tired to release my energy through my body, so it all gets concentrated into my playing. At least that's my explanation.:)

BUT DAMN, I SURE DO HATE THOSE BAD DAYS!!!!

Re: Some days I play great, Some days I suck

Relaxing has got to be one of the keys. I do mostly jamming and whenever I come up with a riff or a rythm that I think is cool, my first thought is, Oh no what if I can't remember this next time I play. Then I can't even play it right then after I just came up with it. It's a mental block thing that I'm going to stop doing and just let it flow.

Being your own biggest critrique won't help, becuase whether you love or hate your playing, the audience will ultimately be the judge.

I remember reading an interview with Brian May and he said something like sometimes he isn't happy with his progress and that he hasn't really progressed since his early days. That really tripped me out because I feel he's fantastic. Another guitarist, Nil Lofgrin (spelling?), a very good player IMO, said something like he felt like he was a beginner every day because there is so much to learn.

I'm going to try to relax and have some fun. I've been taking it a little too seriously the last two years, what with all the gear and complexity. I'll definately keep playing. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with good days and bad days.

Re: Some days I play great, Some days I suck

I find that when I'm playing in front of a crowd that I'm fine and can usually find the goove for rhythm playing no problem and if my tone is there - it's cool. For lead work its a different ballgame. There if the tone is not on target, it goes downhill from there due to nerves and an inability to get what I want from my sound - result try too hard, overplay, stiffen up. Tone affects my playing big time. I find if the tone is there and I get the sounds I want, then it's up to me to get into the zone and play but its no guarantee. I don't know about you guys but my brain speeds everything up at solo time and I need to control the speed of things and focus on the groove, note and the phrase and let it unfold by itself. I don't mean speed of playing - fast lead work has its place for sure. I mean the speed of things happening in your head. It's like when people have a car accident or play sports they say things slow down and they become hyper aware. when it goes wrong on stage for me, it's the opposite, things speed up and I stop sensing whats happening - unless you are really gifted or experienced - you can't play well under those circumstances. I try to relax and keep my mind in slow motion and get to that point where you are totally aware of the music and then you find that place where you need to say something. I think that's why I love playing out.

Me too....LOL.......... :smack:

Me three. Some days I'm just horrible. Other days I play quite well and am very happy with my skills.

Same for everyone, I suspect. Usually when it hits me, I switch instruments for a time. I'll switch to mandolin or something other than my fave electrics, and play those until I'm bored, then come back to guitar and it seems like I get fresh ideas.

Re: Some days I play great, Some days I suck

My ultimate goal is to play and have fun, that way I never have turn on the suckOmeter - If I'm having a good time then it's cool - if I get serious then it's a mess.

Re: Some days I play great, Some days I suck

My playing is all based on my feel. Somedays I feel the guitar really well...it talks to me, I talk to it, we get along great.

Other days I can't feel the guitar at all. Whe it talks to me I can't hear what it's saying, and I don't think that it's listening to what I'm trying to tell it. Those are the days I feel like pitching it across the room.

Re: Some days I play great, Some days I suck

i know exactly what you mean. i just have to be in the right mood to play.. and if someone tells me to pick up a guitar and play something for them at any givin time, i suck.

hey man dont even sweat it like everybody else says it happens to the best of us. i myself have been experienceing it a lot although i think its becasuse im using different strings then befor and different guitar

Re: Some days I play great, Some days I suck

some days i suck, and then other days i suck, and then some days i really suck, and then...once in awhile...when the moon is aligned right with a few of the moons of jupiter and the earth is tilted just so...i don't completely and utterly suck too bad. (that's happened maybe once)

Re: Some days I play great, Some days I suck

I played a gig last weekend where I felt like my fingers where big fat sausages. Weird - some days it's just so easy to do the leads you want to fire out there, and other days it feels like your fingers just don't want to do what they've always done so easily before...
