Some info about this "Seymourized" built in 78, please? :-)

Hi everybody,

I'm a 49 years old European musician. English is not my mother tongue, BTW: sorry if ever I make mistakes in my posts. :-)

Although I use Duncan pickups for 30 years, it's my first post here.

Here's the reason of this new thread from a newbie:

A luthier from my country has sent me a "Seymourized" PAF clone that he had bought in Paris in 1978.

This double cream pickup has a DRC of 8.5k and an inductance of 4.8H on my Extech multimeter.

Only the screws which hold the coils on the baseplate aren't original: they come from another Duncan.

The rest of the pickup appears to be authentic: see the pictures below...

The feet have been cut to a triangular shape but they had apparently a square foot-print initially...

My friend luthier has told me that Seymour didn't yet make his pickups back in the days but that it's a pre-existing PU which has been modified by him.

I'll be grateful if someone can confirm or correct this thought and tell me WHAT exactly was this pickup before to become a "Seymourized". :cool2:

It was probably a old gibson PAF, back when seymour started winding pu's for others they would bring him their PAF's or whatever to rewind.

Looks like it was covered originally.

The question is, how does it sound? If you don't like the sound, I will be glad to remove it for you. I will even do this service for you, free of charge.

I'd wait for either Frank Falbo or Evan Skopp to chime in here.

I'll be glad if they do. I've already discussed with Frank on MLP forum and it has always been great.:cool2:

Thxs to those who have replied until now. To precise a bit my question, I wonder if the pickup was initially...

a) a bunch of parts bought by Seymour (to which brand?)
b) a bunch of parts built/made by Seymour
c) a blend of a) and b)
d) a pickup from another brand that Seymour has rewound.

Being a "guitar pickup freak" (and a Duncan user) for 30 years, I have my humble idea of the answer but I try to "double check" my intuition by chiming where the pickup is born. :14:

Thx again and see ya!

Well, the bobbins, don't look like Gibsons, so I'll assume they're the first made for the yet-to-be-founded Seymour Duncan Co. The baseplate was just the one sold at the time.

I'd consider it like an Antiquity bridge p'up.

HTH,

Re: Some info about this "Seymourized" built in 78, please? :-)

That's right around the time when Seymour would have gotten a bobbin. If so it should be butyrate. I don't know the exact date of the bobbin mold. I love that old "Seymourized" sticker. Assumedly the cover was original but since 1978 anyone could have added and removed a cover. It appears to fall into spec of a 59, obviously it's in that realm. It looks like dark plain enamel wire.

I'll see if I can ask Seymour about the timeline for bobbins and baseplate. What a great piece of history!

Thanks, Lt! I've always been secretly affiliated to the dark side... :14:

What a great piece of history!

That's another reason why I've posted this thread: I wanted to share my piece of Duncan history! : private:

Thanks for the infos, Frank! :)
