Some little Strat discoveries...

Some of these may sound noob-ish, I'm going to share them anyway because they helped me so far.

- Strat vintage style bridge pickup - for the most part, these things are too trebly, too thin, not desireable, people usually put in a higher wound one like a 9.8K or one with Alnico II mags. Well, after getting a good setting on my amp that satisfied all three pickup spots as best as possible, the bridge pickup on my strat (stock custom 50s wirings) still sounded a TAD too bright and nasty. Then I accidently hit the volume knob a TINY bit down and it rolled off the nasty highs and did not kill the volume. So if you have an urge to hit that bridge pickup but it is slightly too bright for you but you like the udnerwounded tone of it, just hit that volume knob back a number.

- My tremolo situation - The way I had it, the 6 screw vintage type trem on my strat, the outer two screws were slightly up and the middle four were screwed all the way down. That I realized a few days ago after reading some forum stuff was the opposite of what is usual. So I put it in the normal way (outer 2 pretty much screwed all the way down, middle four slightly up) and I found it allievated much of the tension and I was able to slide the 5th trem spring on the back (I always wondered why I could only have 4 and guys on the forum and SRV were able to put 5 on and use the vibrato...:15::boggled:)

Then with the 5 springs on, my bridge was *truely* flush to the body and I got a fatter, warmer tone, especially out of the bridge pickup - WHAT a difference! Not as buzzy or just crappy. And I still had essentially perfect tuning stability I had before. (BTW I did not make the bridge adjustments to get a fatter tone, I just did it because my vibrato was acting up[ and when I broke a string everythign else went out of tune, so now that is fixed)

- String Trees - In my case, every time I used the whammy bar, the e and b strings would get caught in the tree and go way sharp. To get rid of that I simply adjusted the nut (made sure all the strings went through and did not get caught in there) and just put the strings over the darn tree. Now it is fine, and I unscrewed the tree off and now it looks cool hehe!

- Nut sauce - This stuff does wonders if you dont have it, buy some!

*out of breath* :nervous::1::)

Re: Some little Strat discoveries...

Go buy some 3 in 1 oil (2 bucks at walmart), worth every penny. When you restring your strat rub some on the frets (NOT A LOT), the saddles, the string trees, and put a bit on your finger and thumb and run every string thru the oily fingers. Keeps the rust off.

also, with the bridge pickup: i didn't notice you tried adjusting the height of the pickup. set the higher end down a bit farther away from the strings than the bass end. it should roll off a bit of the treble, It works for me.

*another thing, just as an experiment, try keeping the middle PUP tone pot all the way down to zero, only effecting the tone of the middle pup.
I'm asking you to do this cuz to me, doing that makes that pup sound more like a neck humbucker, to get that warren haynes/santana lead sound. Just to reassure me.

Re: Some little Strat discoveries...

Actually............wow....I feel stupid that I never even adjusted the pickup height ever..... I'll do that tonight...

I also feel dumb being that I had the guitar for over 2 months now (my first strat) that I NEVER played it with the tone controls wound to zero. And I'm a giant Clapton fan! I'll do that tongiht as well! Thanks for the tips! I always have my middle pickup with the tone knob where the the word "tone" is perpendicular to the strings (about 6 or 7 on thge numbers IIRC) and that gives me the awesome rhythm tones... God I love strats!

I never really adjust the tone knobs other than setting them all the way up or to zero. Also, if you're a big clapton fan (as i am as well), set the height of the neck pup a bit higher. He uses that and the middle pos for his lead tones a lot. You may want to get an overdrive too (if you don't already have one), i think its almost necessary for getting a good higher gained lead. Clapton has the active mid boost to supplement his leads instead of an OD.
