Some new stuff for the shop...

Hey folks,

I was chatting with one of our fellow members today, treyhaislip, and he suggested I post some of these pics to see what you all think.

One of the local lumber yards has some really good prices on hardwood lumber so I picked some up on my trip down there a couple weeks ago. The biggest purchase was a piece of Wormy Maple that is 2" thick X 14" wide x 12' long. I had to get them to cut it in two to get it into the truck, but @ $1.94 BF the price was good... $72.00 Total

This should be enough for quite a few bodies and necks !

Then another find I made was a piece of Swamp Ash that is kind of unique... I had never seen swamp ash that had horizontal grain lines until I found this piece of wood... I bought it from an on-line guitar body blank dealer and paid as much for this one blank as I did for the 12 ft. of Wormy Maple.

Of course I had to explain to my wife that because I had all of this wood I needed some machinery to work it into guitar bodies. So after a few foot rubs and some very expensive dinners I was able to pick up an almost new Grizzly Shaper/Router off of Craigslist and a brand new 14" Grizzly band saw. :arms:

Love the grain on that Swamp Ash!

Isn't that unique? When I was looking for the wood their web site listed their wood in the order from good to bad (top to bottom) and they had this all the way down on the bottom right. I think they made a mistake because it had just been listed. They dated the listings too. So anyway I bought it as soon as I saw it because of that grain. That dealer drew the Stratocaster outline on it, but think I am going to make that on into a SG and put a transparent finish on it. I think it will turn out nice.

+1 To a transparent finish...would be a shame to completely cover that grain! Looking forward to that project!

Re: Some new stuff for the shop...

The 'black ice' finish on the last page of the projects thread would look killer on that as an SG...

I have some water based custom mixed Black Transparent, Sea Blue Transparent, and then some Behlen Solar-Lux Sea Blue, Lemon Yellow, Wheat and Jet Black on hand.

I have also been toying with the idea of using automotive paint on the guitars... G&L has a tangerine color guitar and I found these two close matches to it...

Which do you like better the one on the left or right ? Then I also think this Grey would make a good guitar color too.

The orange on the left is a bit more bright and the one on the right is a bit more tame. The grey color has some blue in it which I think is nice.

Here is an example of a small piece of mahogany with the wood grain highlighted with that custom water based black stain. Then I stained it with Solar-Lux Lemon Yellow and sprayed with 5 coats of lacquer. I only sanded between the 4th and 5th coats for expediency. No sanding sealer etc... was used, it was just a quick test...

The grain changes depending on how the light hits it... I hope my body does the same thing.

At first I liked the one on the left better cuz the color "popped" a bit.. But after looking a few seconds, the one on the right appears it may have either some flake or pearl to it. (hard to tell from the pics) If thats the case tho, Id go with the one on the right.. Nice piece of ash you got there...

Thanks ! I can't wait to get the template on it and start to get it traced out and ready to cut. That is going to be a fun project. I agree I like the one on the right. I figure with a lot of the color if it is too bright it will be a little overwhelming. Here is what the G&L color looks like...

Looking forward to the progress!

You mean center the the grain a little more ? Oh for sure... The pattern would need to be tilted a little to the top left or bottom to the right.
