Some Pickup Wiring Help?

Am I correct that I need to twist some spare lead wire around these short leads, then solder them together before heat shrink wrapping it?

I believe this pickup came off of a 2001 Indonesian Ibanez low end RG. Anyone know which is the hot? I looked up some Ibanez wiring diagrams but couldn't see anything difinitively.

What was the purpose of the shrinkwrap when you'll be re-doing the hookup lead anyhow??

Re: Some Pickup Wiring Help?

Those are the coil leads. You don't want to short them together.

I don't want to short them together. I need to extend all leads out seprately so I have enough wire to solder them to the pots in a guitar.

Re: Some Pickup Wiring Help?

My point was, if they are already connected to the main lead, leave them that way.

I found this pickup laying around, and am not putting it back in the guitar it came out of. I did not cut the wires short myself. Not sure how it happened..

Re: Some Pickup Wiring Help?

You need to remove the red lead and replace it with a length of lead long enough to reach your Vol/tone cavity.

Wouldn't this involve getting into the pick up and doing some rewiring inside the pick up?
I'd rather splice it from where that wire is coming out from.

Re: Some Pickup Wiring Help?

Yeah, of course you need to splice and solder it. Just pull the wire out of that hole on the edge of the pick up first so the wire runs under the pick up when you install it. Also, another little tip, make sure you use 'approximately' the same sized wire to extend it.

Re: Some Pickup Wiring Help?

Ok, I see now that you'd put the photos in the wrong time order......I was assuming you'd added heatshrink.

The output red wire will attach to 2 wires most likely. As to 'wiring inside the pickup', well you're already 'inside' the pickup as it stands. Those soldered connections are the hookup wire to the coil leads, and perhaps the series connection.
All you need to do is find whatever 2 or 4 wires the red connector wire is soldered to and do a straight replacement to the new hookup wire.
