Some questions about the 59/Custom.

Those of you who have used one I was wondering...

How did you like it clean?

Split or Parallel?

What were using in the neck and how did the two blend together?

If you did split it did you use the slug or screw coil?

Thanks for your help in advance guys.

Re: Some questions about the 59/Custom.

First off, I use mine with an A2.

1- I don't like a clean bridge humbucker in the first place.

2- Split, parallel was too bright.

3-Pearly Gates with roughcast magnet. It's actually pretty much a perfect match, they both have a certain raunchy quality to them.

4-Slug coil, aka the Custom coil. Just the 59 coil by itself was too thin.

Re: Some questions about the 59/Custom.

A5 mag here, in a Les Paul.

1. It's fine clean, but I also am one that doesn't use a bridge humbucker clean very often. I mean to say that I haven't done a lot of clean humbucker compare/contrasts. I can say that the clean is far better than hotter pickups I've used such as the Invader or DMZ X2N.

2. Do you mean series or parallel? Series here. I prefer series generally speaking, for the fuller sound. I have had some pickups that I had on a series/parallel toggle in the past.

3. Jazz neck, great match! Levels match up easily and well, and the clear tone of the Jazz is very compatible with the hybrid.

4. Not split.

I meant if you added some sort tapping function did you prefer it in split or parallel, assuming you did both. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Some questions about the 59/Custom.

Mine is a double screw roughcast A5 version. I split to the Custom coil. I use it with an Alnico II Pro in the neck. I am not big on a clean bridge humbucker, but this one I like. It has a perfect combo of touch-sensitivity and power.

Re: Some questions about the 59/Custom.

I have a standard A5 mounted on the body of a Charvel. Split to the custom coil (slugs) rather than parallel. I think it sounds fine clean. In the neck I use a stag mag split most of the time with the custom coil and I like it.

Re: Some questions about the 59/Custom.

For further consideration, I'd be dropping this in my Strat. I probably won't change the magnet unless it's just that bright.

Re: Some questions about the 59/Custom.

Mine is in a 1988 Kramer F3000. An awesome pickup. Perfect amount of output for basically any application.

Dont know what coil mine is tapped to but the clean tones are fantastic!

Clarity of this pickup is incredible-one of the best Duncan makes.

My neck pickup in the Kramer is a vintage Hot Rails, which i do not have wired to run parallel with it.

trust me, if you play classic rock, progressive metal/rock, you will be very happy with this pickup.

Re: Some questions about the 59/Custom.

I've got an UOA5 in mine. It's in my Alder body "test bed" Strat with an OFR. I have a Duncan P90 in the neck but positioned as if it was a 24 fret. I haven't split yet, so I can't comment on that. I like it clean. Mixed with the neck sounds good too.

Re: Some questions about the 59/Custom.

I have a 59/Custom paired with a Dimarzio PAF Joe in the neck. The two pickups work very well together; wired on a 5-way super switch I get the following combinations:

1) bridge in series, 2) bridge in parallel, 3) both in parallel, 4) tapped slug coils, 5) neck in series

The cleans are incredible. The 59/Custom in parallel is an excellent alternative that takes a little edge off and cleans up the output just enough for my tastes. The cleans from the split slug coils are as good as anything I have.

I play a wide variety of styles and need guitars that are versatile. This is a very good combination that covers a lot of tonal ground for me.

Re: Some questions about the 59/Custom.

The other one I use is in an HSS Strat. I have a Five Two in the middle, and a Classic Stack in the neck. All switch positions are humcancelling. When I split the 59/C, it is used with either the Five Two or one coil of the Stack. I wrote about it in a blog here.

Probably not going to go the HSS route here. I've been deciding between an HS setup or HH setup. BTW, do you have any recordings with that Strat? I've always greatly admired that build!

Not official ones yet. We will be going into the studio this month, though, and I plan to be using it a lot.

Re: Some questions about the 59/Custom.

I have one in a Modern Player Tele. Hybrid bridge standard wind Alnico II Pro Strat middle Alnico II Tele neck ( RW/RP).
Like the pickup split (slug coil) and in particular split with the Strat middle a LOT clean. Overall one of the best clean humbuckers I have used in the bridge.
