Somebody help me with expensive GAS.

It's official, I have been hit HARD with GAS this time. Ever since playing a couple Strats a week ago, I really want one. However, I want something that can give me a thicker Les Paul type sound as well.

I need a Don Grosh Bent Top Custom. I see them, I see the reviews, and I want... BAD. Anybody have any experience with these fancy strats?

I'm debating on whether I should save up this summer for the Grosh or make my own through USA Custom Guitars or Warmoth. The appointments don't look that crazy, but yet everyone that plays one says the tone is amazing. Does a mahogany/maple body with a maple/rosewood neck really nail both styles? I've also seen Basswood bodies with maple tops, but basswood doesn't seem to be that great of wood to me (from what I've gathered). Anyone care to enlighten me?

The thing I like about Grosh over the Tom Andersons and Suhrs is that they seem to prefer chunky C necks on their guitars, not skinny or V'd.
If you've got the dough for a PRS, you've got enough for a Grosh. I see some go for around $1300 on Ebay. The bent top you're talking about is sweet.
Another good option is a Fender Showmaster H-S-S. I see all of these kinds of guitars as a good cross between a strat and a neck thru.

As far as expensive G.A.S.....that's the only kind that's not a waste of money, because if you don't pay full retail, you can always shuffle them around without taking a bad loss. Everything in my signature link could be sold for more than I paid. Every single piece.

1300 is definitely affordable (my Les Paul was exactly 1265).

I was comparing the different superstrat guitars thanks to the Melancon thread. I love the sound of a good strat, the Grosh supposedly gives you a great strat tone with a les paul type tone that's a bit richer than the norm.
I don't even have to play on the neck before buying because chunky C necks are my favorite, so I know I'll be right at home. Even better is that in a few weeks, when I'm out of college, there's a really high end music store about 25 minutes away from me that has the Bent Top, so I'll be playing that for sure (that and Infeld and McInturff, Anderson, Suhr, Vox amps, Blockhead amps, Tophat amps, Dr. Z amps etc. I should take off a week to try it all out


I was looking at a McInturff Monarch, but the reviews stated that the guitar being made of mahogany, makes every a warm tone. Not my cup of tea

Expensive gas seems to be regulated by the big corporate oil companies. Nothing you can do about it. :laugh2:

Not just Guitar Center, but I refuse to pay retail for anything except strings, and I still grind the tax off those too. LOL

If you get good at last minute proxy bidding, anything on Ebay is YOURS.
Also, if you keep the cash in hand till you're really ready to buy, you can always see something pop up on the local used market, then speed over to their house and throw money in their hand that day. If you snooze, you lose. By the time you've rounded up your money, the thing is sold to someone else. Some of my stuff was bought by me being the first caller with the money in hand. If I would have waited 1 day longer, it would have been snapped up by someone else. These expensive boutique guitars you're looking at don't come up often, but when they do....have your cash in hand
and you'll make their loss your gain.

I'm going to save up as much as possible as soon as possible so that I will have the money on hand when I do see something like that come up.

Hmmm . . . I don't think I have enough experience to guess what it is, but I'm pretty sure its not a Fender product just by how "square" the neck joint is.

That is a pretty killer guitar, but where's the versatility GJ? Lots of guitars look pretty, but it's the functionality of it all that makes it stay with you. I want this next guitar to stay with me for the next 60 years

Another guitar manufacture you should consider is G&L. The Legacy HB, Legacy 2HB, or an Invader, are all great guitars and match the criteria you're looking for.

Great suggestions Sprinter. The Legacy HB in particular, looks to be my style.

I guess I'm just gonna have to try them both and see which one feels more comfortable (right now I'm partial to the Grosh because of the chunky C, but we'll see )
