I'm thinking that I may want to put Phat-Cat P-90s in my PRS Santana SE. The current pups are Seymour Duncan Jazz and JB humbuckers. I love the tone and gain of the P-90s in my Blues Hawk and would like to have similar ability to break-up my amp on the solid body Santana.

Nuts? Certainly odd! Anybody else have experience replacing HBs with Phats? What else would need to be changed?

This is the intended victim for replacing the Jazz/JB with Phat Cats and nickel covers.

If you didnt already have a guitar with p90's i'd say yeah, go ahead. Sometimes it's nice to have different guitars with completely different tones, rather than lots of variations on the same type of pickup.

That's how I feel personally, anyway.

That's what I was thinking. I now have three guitars with double hums (ES-137, Bluesbird, and this PRS) a Fat Strat, and the Bluesbird with P90s. The lightweight solid body PRS would make a nice little hot-rodded P90.

Does anyone know how the Phat Cat would compare to the P90 used in the PRS SE Soapbar?

BTW - duly noted, JB. One in line for the JB take-off.

P-90 goodness is hard to beat. Fatter than the fattest stray single, more cut than the most slicing bucker. What's not to like?

Those PRS soapbars are sweet. Only thing I could imagine sweeter would be one with duncans....

Your lucky since there are a number of humbucker sized p-90's available from a number of different manufacturers. Give each of them a listen before you make your choice.

Fine. Ordered 'em. While I'm waiting for delivery I might as well put on a new bone nut and get set up for 11s. :naughty:

Well, they're in. And sound abso-freakin-lutley amazing. It is incredible how many different sounds can be had by rolling off volume or tone. What a great, fat single coil tone! I have to admit I was a little worried about the possibility of hum, but so far it is not an issue at all.

And they look pretty darn good in this guitar, too. I'll post photos as soon as I can. Now I'm thinking I may have to replace the bucker in my HSS Strat with a Phat Cat!

P90s are wonderful aren't they? Looking at your gear list, now you need a Tele!
