I tend to like slightly hotter P-90s than vintage so I bought the "Hot" set. Even though all the sound clips I've heard of the JJN sounded amazing (even cleans sounded good and clean), I was a bit afraid to go that hot for fear of not being able to get a really clean tone from it.
Here's my theory: If the vintage range is roughly 8-10k, the "Hot" is about 2k higher which should give me some good growl but should still clean up pretty well. The JJN is admittedly only .55k more, but I'm thinking that above 11k is really pushing it to get good cleans. But I may be wrong...the JJN really sounded awesome in clips.
I'm open to anyone else's ideas or experience.
PS: I love how Jared James Nichols refers to Leslie West as "the king at the top of the mountain" of P-90 tone. I couldn't agree more. And just like JJN, Leslie's P-90 tone in Mississippi Queen is what initially turned me on to P-90s 53 years ago.
