someone please explain MIDI

Can someone give me some help with MIDI? I always hear about it but never took the time to understand it. The only thing I know about it is that my keyboard has MIDI out.

Also, I know you can control effects with it somehow.

PLEASE explain what it is and what you can do with it! Thanks

Codelanguage for music units, so that they can talk together, quite slow by modern standart.

MIDI = Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It has been around for a long time. It was developed as a standard communications protocol for electronic musical instruments. It will transmit musical pitch and volume from a keyboard to other keyboards, synths, or PCs. FX units use it to transmit & receive patch selections & other expression parameters. (Nutshell city here.)
