Something boring about the Custom....

Re: Something boring about the Custom....

IP.S.- I know some of you will say try the Custom 8. I have, but then you have the problem with having great singing leads but muddy rythyms, you can't get that chunky metal riffing from the Custom 8.

:yell:

C8 IS the way.

Can't get chunky rhythms? Muddy?! You've got a very different experience than me.

Re: Something boring about the Custom....

Some of us have discovered the perfect solution to this: hex pole screws for the 3 low strings. Signing leads, tight rhythm. It is the best of both worlds.:fing2:

Now that sounds cool!! :eyecrazy:

Compared to the regular Custom, the rythms of the C8 are not as tight-- that's what I was getting at. Perhaps I should have used different wording.

I'm actually looking for them to be a little looser. Not as loose as an A5 and not even close to as loose or sweet as an A2. Just a bit more give than the ceramic while still retaining tightness and more importantly aggressivness. I just need to do the swap and play with it really.

Re: Something boring about the Custom....

IMHO the custom needs a really fat guitar driving it. A flying V or some nasty piece of Les Paul (not one of those weight-relieved nashvilled wimpy ones).

Re: Something boring about the Custom....

Call me crazy, but I like the custom a lot better with standard Gibson 300K pots. I think it sounds more vintage.

It sounds more modern with 500K's, which I don't like.

And another +1. Kinda bright and thin with 500K's.

I have always used the custom with 250K or 300K for this reason:)

Re: Something boring about the Custom....

What about "airing" it by removing the keeper bar, but using the ceramic magnet. ;)

I like my Custom 8 as is, but since this would be so easy to do I'll have to give it a try.
