Something...uhm...very different: "Arkhangelsk" live

It´s from my bands last live concert. The band is called Das Mädchen and the tune Arkhangelsk.

I teached at the university in Arkhangelsk, Northwest Russia, some weeks every autumn for 4 years in a row. I put some pics from Arkhangelsk and a monologue over the pics in the live clip, to reinforce the sentiments I got from the city. I play a Godin Artisan ST-1, and use the neck pickup, a Dimarzio Area 61, to get some ugly industrial sounds behind the tune. What say you about it?

Anyone who can see which modern philosopher has inspired to the monologue text for the pics in the latter part of the tune?

Ok, perhaps not so easy to guess, but its from Jürgen Habermas and his view on the Modern project as something still un-finished. The focus has been on economy and technology, but the ideals on equality and social justice has been lost in the process.

Hey I enjoyed this -- always thought Habermas presented an effective argument to work with within the context of late capitalism, even if he is something of a Kantian rationalist in his construction of deliberative ideals. Also, I REALLY appreciated that you followed something of a modern esthetic in your performance. It was much more melodic than usual, much less a cacaphony of post-modern indulgence. To my ears, this was great jazz.

Thanks a lot for your review. I can see that you understand modern philosophy, which was what I teached in Arkhangelsk for the PhD-students there. It would be really interesting to hear a clip from you.

Hah -- what a nice coincidence. I'm in a PhD program studying rhetoric, so I've been exposed to a lot of social theory and philosophy, and have a decent grasp on modernism. Not sure how much bearing that's had on my music though, since honestly I only really started picking up some music theory over the last 6 months. I've been playing, recording, and composing music for about 10 years, but much of that time was spent feeling my way around in the dark.

Here is my Soundcloud page: https://soundcloud.com/amir-hassan-2 I posted the first clip "Dance to Your Disease" on the forum last night, though it's very minimalist and simple overall. The second clip, "9:11" is just the basic idea for what I hope will become a full production, but you might enjoy it for the conceptual element. "One Chord Too Many" is just a live clip of my band jamming about a month ago. We've only been playing together for a few months. "Razers" (the spelling is intentional) is something I made mostly by myself, and "epiphany" was only me as well. You might enjoy "nine is a lucky number in Thai" for the jazzy elements or "Körper and Geist" for the philosophic references and genre play.

Also, here is my band-mate Mike's page https://soundcloud.com/aandross which we are using as the "official" People (pH)arm page. We are on a sort of hiatus, since I am taking my comprehensive exams in the first week of March, but I'm hoping we hoping we can have a cohesive offering put together by the end of the summer. I'd be very interested in hearing what you think. :)

I liked the dreamy character of your guitar in On Chord too Manyy. 9:11 was also cool. :)

What a ride. Thanks for sharing that.

I could listen to that stuff all night.

Thanks thelivingdead. :)

And 4.30, gibson175, is a actually a pic from from a destroyed industry area in Romania. I prefer the pics from the Sutyagin house at the end. I also like the sound of my guitar; it sounds like a fusion of a roadgrader and an industrial fan.

That was a good video. I really liked that. I'm always into hearing something new. I get tired of mainstream music so much. This was refreshing to hear. It reminds me of an old factory I lived behind when I was young. It was an old pipe fitting factory built in the 1800's and was torn down almost 20 years ago. It still hasn't been built over. It is said the land is contaminated or something. It was a pretty dark and dingy place when it was operating. You could smell the steel.

Re: Something...uhm...very different: "Arkhangelsk" live

Yes, I´ve seen those old factory ruins everywhere. In Europe, USA and Russia. So for me that´s what the tune is about. Don´t know if the other guys in the group has that picture when they play, though. It wouldn´t fit to play something pentatonic on the guitar, that´s for sure. :)
