Sometimes thrift stores rock!

In my neck of the woods, there are two thrift shops and two pawn shops. I stop by each of them 2-3 times a week in hopes of finding a few bargains. I stopped by one late Sunday afternoon and spotted a Ross RGC 65 combo amp. Dirty, filthy, etc.....it was still on the cart, so I had to wait 10 minutes till the gal unloaded it. By that time two other fellas had spotted it, but the gal told them I had first crack. It was $14.00, so I figured what the heck.....if nothing else I could use the speaker.

Got it home, plugged it in and after twisting the sticky pots and dealing with a bad jack, it came to life....IT"S ALIVE!!! I only had 10 minutes or so with it before being called away by my granddaughter to Papa duty, (she is the light if my life and has me wrapped around her little finger) but the darn thing is not too bad. It needs some work, (which I will get to tomorrow) but the clean tones were not too bad. It has a "TUBE BLASTER" switch and dedicated gain knob, built in chorus with rate and depth and a nice Fenderish spring reverb that get's real wet.....

Not much info online and what I did find was not to complimentary, but for $14.00 I don't really care. I'll have some fun with it for a while before giving it away to someone who needs it.

The real ache came today when I swung into my fav pawn shop and spotted a silver face Super Reverb for $699.00. I played it for a half hour or so. The gal I deal with said it just came oout yesterday so she couldn't lower it too much...she said I could have it for $600. If I had hte $, I'd nab it....but it could have been $200 and I still wouldn't have been able to get it. Oh well!

I'm gonna pop some tags...

I need to visit some pawn shops, I bet those Silverfaces were a song about 10 years ago.

I bought a 1972 Silverface Quad Reverb in 1980 for $350, still have the beast. I didn't have a license back then I remember wheeling it home two miles down the main drag with my best friend up and down hills.

The age of the internet really ruined the pawn shop experience, because now they never under-price anything. But in this economy, you can still find some good bargains.

On the other hand, I'm a thrift store addict who stops at my favorite ones like Goodwill and Salvation Army, and I'm very picky. I never feel the need to buy junk, but I can spot good stuff a mile away. The rule is.....the better the neighborhood it's in, the better the thrift shop.

I'm a sucker for thrift shops, flea markets, garage sales and such….. you often find great surprises ! Espacially old MIJ Teiscos, Univox, whatchamacallit golden oldies I'm so fond of ! I remember buying my Electro-Harmonix Freedom amp in a yard sale…. How much for that ? I asked….. 5$ , sir….. but I must tell you, the nice lady told me, that this radio aint working anymore…. :fingersx:

Love them !!!
