Sorry DT fans....

im gonna appoligize right now for what i am about to post...i have been working on learning Overture 1928 for a few weeks now and i wanna post what i have got...it's really rough at about 2 minutes during the solo but i think everything else is kind of decent...so guys give it to me straight....what do you think of it

Tone's a little undefined and mushy, lacking the bottom end as well. Lead tone is pretty thin and unlively. Some of the parts are played well, but for the most part it sounds like you hit a lot of off notes.

A little tip: Petrucci plays a lot of difficult and fast passages that definetely take some getting used to...I recommend that you take more time into learning it. Break each passage up into many segments and take a hack at each one at a tempo you're comfortable with, then slowly build up your chops so that you can cope with the album's. One of the most recognizable mistakes you make is you overlook accuracy for speed. Find balance and I think you'll be much happier with the results.

Good Job man!! Your well on your way. If I were able to do that at your age I would have been a happy camper. Anyway, it takes work, but you'll get it all down pat.

i started doing that at one part and you are right i was happy with the results...as for tone..i did the song all with one guitar all at once so there is no lead or regular tone...jsut my guitar tone through my guitar port...1/2 my problem is that i dont sit down and get parts perfect by ear..i just kind of settle and move on because i wanna get the song done...but hopefully everything will come in time

not bad dude...even though you don't know the whole thing, you do a good job of faking it =)

I really didn't like that album though..lol..that song's one of the highpoints on it for me...

(I'd much rather listen to Soilwork..heh)

thanks for the response guys, im creepin up on 3 years though lol. shredder...u got it right there are some points that i just fake it lol...Scenes from a Memory is one of my favorite cd's...the funny part is i enjoy the softer songs (Regression, Through My words, The Spirit Caries On) alot more then i do the heavier stuff.

First let me say that you did a good job, DT can be hard stuff to play. ( I was a Petrucci worshiper when I was in high school ) But all of the points Guitarist made above hold true. Patience is the key to really getting down music like this. I used to do the same thing, rush through learning a song, and not really get the fast parts down cleanly. Even though it can be boring, building up speed using a metronome is VERY benificial.
You're tone was VERY buzzy and mushy, but it is hard to nail that petrucci tone, it's very tight on rhythm parts and very smooth, saturated and creamy on leads. (I think he used Mesa MKII C+'s and MK IV's on SFAM) Also, the leads did sound sterile, and one reason is that you didn't do much, if any vibrato. JP has a nice vibrato that really makes his leads sing!

After listening to your clip, I think you mean Fatal Tragedy. (BTW,The instrumental section at the end of that track is frickin' cool!)

My thoughts...

A good start... for the lead passages you might want to work on your vibrato and finger-intonation. I can hear some of those single notes without vibrato wavering somewhat... this is largely due to uneven finger pressure and it takes a lot of practice to get it right where the notes sustain evenly. Everybody's vibrato is different as well. I prefer one thats smooth and fluid but the main thing to concentrate on with vibrato is that the pitch oscillation is EVEN. Meaning that it comes back to the original note and the same spot you bent it to each time. This kind of finesse only comes with careful practice... you'll get it right in time.

Guitarist pretty much hit the nail on the head when it came to accurancy and patience. With complicated lead playing... what you get out of it is exactly what you put into it. Patience will yeild better results than "get it done quickly" methods.

As for the tone... personally I'd bump up the bass a tad and back off the treble and the gain. In the beginning it was very hard to distinguish individual chord attacks from one another.

So you're eding towards the 3 year mark... sound like you've got an excellent start. Keep up the good work and focus on the details. :clap:

it's an instrumental yea.. it's friggin amazing. my fav of DT is dance of eternity though.

Pretty good, you obviously just need to play it a lot and then you will have all the finishing touches that will perfect this song down pat. Can you post the backing track to this song if you have it handy?
