sorry newbie question

I know this is a really stupid question. but i need to know.
If i have only one single coil pickup in my guitar. will it matter which wire goes to live and to ground. is there such a thing as one pickup out of phase?
will it sound bad if the wires are reversed?

Four conductor wire pups can be set up so that the two coils are out of phase w/each other. That is different than the problem that you are anticipating.
