Re: sort of a QOTSA sounding song

Guitar tones rock and the playing is tight, the vocals sound like early Neil Young a good thing. My complaint is one riff doesn't hold my attention for three plus minutes and neither does the one vocal melody. I think it needs more interest.

Re: sort of a QOTSA sounding song

innerdreamrecords, thanks for the post! the repetitive riff was just something that happened, like, i couldn't stop myself! yea, your comments about it make sense. this was the first time i wrote something like that. i think whatever QOTSA song i heard was pretty repetitive, and that stuck in my brain. sometimes i think of stuff like this as being hypnotic. but i can see how others could simply call it boring! thanks again for your input.

Re: sort of a QOTSA sounding song

In some types of dance music they use pedal point where the bass stays on the root of the key for the entire song but things like vocal melodies and keyboard melodies change to keep you interested. Even if you put a hook vocal line with the other line in that would add more interest.

Re: sort of a QOTSA sounding song

cool, I like the tones and where you are going with this

I like how the rhythym guitar changes directionally with the production

what equipment did you use? I like the background guitars, very hypnotic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I gotta get some stuff of mine out more along these lines. :)

Re: sort of a QOTSA sounding song

everdrone, thanks a lot! i used a les paul and split my signal. left track was an old boss hm3 pedal into a boss space echo into a vox ac4tv. right track was little big muff going into a peavey classic 50 watt. the times were there is an 3rd track of guitar i was lazy and simply copied the left track to the center as well. gave a surprisingly different tone to the whole of the guitars. bass was a fender re-issue 62 pbass. drums were free drumcore sample pack i got when i bought tracktion3 software. thanks again for listening and for the comment.

funny thing, since then i have found out that i think the guitar sounds better when the little big muff goes into the vox.

Re: sort of a QOTSA sounding song

sweet setup dude, I dig!! I dont like leaving guitar in center track for too long in the song but it sounds pretty amazing when you do it! good stuff :)

Re: sort of a QOTSA sounding song

thanks a lot! the center track guitar was sort of a happy accident. i also realize that for the vox tones i didn't mic the speaker. i used a palmer pdi-09 speaker simulator. the peavey was mic'd with an sm58.

Re: sort of a QOTSA sounding song

Dude, I'm really digging this, seriously. I totally get the 'hypnotic' guitar riff thing and the panning was a great idea. Nice tone too. Totally get the QOTSA reference but it doesn't sound like a rip-off, the vocals are too different.

The mix isn't great though. The rhythm guitar can definitely be brough down a bit, the lead would sound awesome with a touch more gain and some delay and the drums could do with being given a bit more space to breathe. I like how the vocals are buried, it adds to the whole hypnotic effect of the track but I'd bring them up just a tiny little bit. It'd be really cool if you did a similar panning sort of thing with the vocals as you did with the guitars.

Compositionally, I love how it's so simple but I think it needs an outro. Maybe just bring in some feedback, a simple vocal melody and fade the guitars and assorted noise out and in again over each other while the drums gradually get heavier and louder? I dunno, just an idea of what I would do but seriously, I think it sounds really good the way it is.

I don't even ****ing like QOTSA...

Re: sort of a QOTSA sounding song

interesting ideas kam. i really appreciate the feedback. i like the idea of an outro, and/or maybe an intro with feedback/noise. that probably would be good since the riff is repeated over and over. as for the mix, yea man, this mixing/production thing is a black art. i still feel like i have no idea what the heck i'm doing. great suggestions. thanks again.

the opposite would be cool as well where the chords stay the same but the bass changes!

Re: sort of a QOTSA sounding song

so im a HUGE queens fan. in fact theyve been my favorite band since i was in the 7th grade.

sounds kinda like If Only, but reminisces a few other songs that i cant quite place. which i think is definitely a plus, a lot of the same Robo Rock kinda feel that the first two queens records had.

i didnt read all the replies, but i saw something about the lead needing to be beefed up and i agree, maybe if you punched up the gain and put it on the neck pickup and then maybe if you had to roll back the volume

i know recordings a pain, i had to do some stuff awhile ago in high school using Audacity. it was supposed to be all punk, but i still hated the way it all came out. to me it sounded about as bad as a lot of the germs stuff, and as far as punk goes, they still have a sh1tty sound.

i wish i could help you on your recordings!

otherwise....keep up the writing at the very least!

Re: sort of a QOTSA sounding song

on second thought it reminds me of them crooked vultures. which is almost the same band
