I haven't had a chance to try the Surfers, but I hear a noticeable difference between Antiquities and APSs. There really is a difference with hand winding, IMO.
in any case, there's nothing wrong with SSLs, either.

It's real shame, there are no Antiquity recordings to compare to the other models.
I would be willing to pay the extra cash for superior sound and dynamics, but I have no use for the aged looks since I would put them in a "modern looking" guitar.
Anybody got any recordings???

The Antiquitys are kinda non-custom Custom Shop pickups... I have the Ant1s and I am not into the looks of 'em either but they are worth the extra price for sound imo.

yup the ants are great, i have a set of surfers and texas hots and they are both great. i also have a set of aps and they are nice as well but both sets of antiquitys sound more complex and have a sweeter more musical tone. the ssl1 is a nice pup and most people will be very happy but i think the surfers are better for sure. is it worth the extra price? thats up to you, for me it is.

The Ant II Surfers sound better than the SSL-1. More complex and a throatier, better tone. Go for the Surfers...the diff may be subtle (or not!) but if you want the ultimate and want to end your search for the ultimate then quit worrying about it and just get the Surfers and be done with it. You don't need to hear recordings first...you need to hear the Antiquity II's in your own guitar.

i have had aps1, antiquity texas hot, and antiquity II surfer, and i think they are all just a tad different. The difference between the aps1 and texas hot was something i could hear, but not something that clearly made one sound better than the other. I didn't like the antiquity II surfer very much, but according to the consensus here, it must just be my ears

the texas hots have a thicker middier sound than the brighter scooped surfers. in general i like alnico II pups more but the surfers are a more traditional fender tone that works better for some things.
