Sound absorption panels

Just throwing this out there.

I’ve been making these and selling them for $45 locally. A buddy of mine, up in Boston, asked if I’d be willing to ship. So with a little research, I’ve found that shipping 2 of the 48”x18”x3” panels runs $90 to Boston....OUCH! But, if I made the panels 24x18x3, I could ship 5 of those for around $50.

So basically, 5 - 24”x18”x3” panels ($25 per panel) shipped in the US would run $180.

If there’s any interest, let me know.

Panels are ROXUL, 1x3 wood framed (glued and nailed) and covered with fabric. The ones I’m making are black, but other colors can be done as well.

I've made a bunch of these in 4x6ft frames. They're easy to move around when recording to allow less/more room sound, and work very well to kill weird echos in rooms and bass buildup in corners. I think that room treatment is often overlooked . . . a great amp in a ****ty sounding room won't sound all that great.

Yeah, room treatment isn’t the cool, sexy purchase, but a treated room is a must. Most of the local ones I’ve sold were for mixing desk areas. They’ve also been hinged for placing in front of instruments to tame mic bleed in live rooms, and of course on the walls in live rooms.

So I’m not even going to pretend I know what ROXUL is, can you give me a crash course? How does this compare to the foam squares?

Roxul = rock wool. It's just fireproof insulation that happens to work well as a sound absorber. Panels made of it should work as well (or better) than your typical acoustic foam squares, and will be a lot cheaper.

We are hoping to finish our new house soon, so this might be JUST what I need! Are they best utilized in any particular way/places?

In a mixing environment- First reflection points from monitors, front wall behind monitors, back wall behind listening area, as a “cloud” above mixing desk chair, in corners for bass traps.

Live/tracking room - Spaced out along walls to deaden reflections, as a barrier between amps for mic bleed when tracking live off the floor, as a cloud, corner bass traps.

Luke, if you want to make your own, there’s plenty of videos on YouTube that shows how. I’ve got one on there as well. They run about $20-$25 each to make. Or if want to buy them, let me know that as well....lol.

Here’s a video on where to start as for placement. It’s based on a media/home theater layout, but works for a mixing space as well.
