I'ld have loved to hear the A6 in this shootout. I wonder if it might be "the one". ;)

The A6 has a very flat lead sound. hmmm .... a Jazzy sound!

Thanks for sharing.

Regarding those who are ready to base their decisions on those clips, DON'T. I do not think comparing pickups in different guitars (even tho they might have the same body and neck wood) is fair. Don't wanna be an ass. Still what Chubtone did is great.

I have 3 LPs, a LP95 standard, a 03R8 and a 04R7. All sound different, with the same pickup. And there are incredible output differences, especially between the 95LPstandard and the R7.

Chub,

Nice job & real nice playing. I'ld put them in this order (best to worst)

1. Duncan '59 (richer sounding than the rest)

2. Holmes (nice tone, but somewhat bright sounding).

3. EVH & Voodoo (neither of these impressed me much)

Re: Sound Clip: Holmes vs. Duncan 59 vs. Voodoo 59 vs. Duncan EVH

I actually disagree with most of the posters about the Holmes, at least for the kind of music you're playing. I think the sound is a little soupy. Those extra frequencies that it has over the Voodoo and '59 are mostly in the low end and low mids, and wouldn't really help that much ore be that noticeable once you were playing with bass and drums. I like the Voodoo the best, because it split the difference between the 59 and the Holmes - It was tighter than the Holmes but deeper than the 59. The 59 was kind of cool in its own right - Yeah, it's not as deep as the others, but it's more in your face, no BS (and less distorted). The EVH came in 4th, although if you really like EVH, it did noticeably have his sound.

1. Voodoo
2. Holmes & '59 (tie)
4. EVH

Which one has the most mids? The Holmes? I think it sound the most rich.

That is a big reason I have a hard time getting past the Rio Grande BBQ...richness.

Re: Sound Clip: Holmes vs. Duncan 59 vs. Voodoo 59 vs. Duncan EVH

To my ear, the '59 certainly holds its own. The Holmes might have the slightest edge, but if the issue is a price dependant comparison, then the '59 scores really, really high. I don't like the EVH pickup.

Re: Sound Clip: Holmes vs. Duncan 59 vs. Voodoo 59 vs. Duncan EVH

hey chub nice job on the pickup comparison, I know its not perfect but I think it gives a nice comparison between all the pickups involved. I have a question for you and all the others on this forum. your guitars are all rear mounted pickup type guitars. have you ever tried thiese pickups in guitars with a pick guard (with the routed out space under the pick guard like on a fender strat hum+mum type guitar). people on this forum claim there is a substantial differance in tone. me, I dont know, I never had a rear mounted humbucker strat before but if any body knows please post Ide like to know. I love that tobacco burst guitar is that a warmoth? -thnx

Re: Sound Clip: Holmes vs. Duncan 59 vs. Voodoo 59 vs. Duncan EVH

Like I said, I'm curious if all these pickups were played through the same tone setting of the amp. If so, that is NOT the way most players would have it. Most would adjust the tone to compliment the pickup. Lew
