Sound is different after this change...why

I was using a single coil (fender) at the neck and a Screamin Demon at the bridge...decided to go simple and removed the single coil pickup...wired as per the seymour diagram for 1 volume 1 humbucker...now my guitar sounds cleaner...and this is not in a good way....can anyone explain this, I don't get it....

Re: Sound is different after this change...why

You have it wired straight to a single volume pot with no tone control, and you bypassed the selector switch? Is that correct?

If you DID have it connected to a tone control before, removing it from the circuit could change your tone. Do you have it connected to a 250k or 500k volume pot?

Why did you want to do away with the versatility of having a single coil option anyway? Just curious.

Better yet (or worse depending on whether or not you view this as a "penis reduction" :lmao: ) try connecting the pickup directly to the jack, thus, bypassing the volume pot as well.

You'd get a more upfront, more screaming tone (which you cannot tame ;) ).

I'll bet that when he says it sounds "cleaner" he means Brighter. He probably needs the tone control back in the circuit. The Demon is a clean sounding pickup anyway.

Re: Sound is different after this change...why

EVery pot loses some signal to the ground even when at 10, unless it is a special (no-loading) one.

Thus, connecting the pickup directly into the jack WILL additionally increase output, clarity, and especially uppermids (not only highs).

Needless to say, but some of us are more endowed to begin with...all that aside...the neck pickup kept shorting out and causing a big ground hum at last gig...since I hardly ever use it, I disconnected it...by cleaner I mean just that...less sustain and distortion...anyone at Duncan or anyone who can help me understand this...going right from pickup to volume pot...no tone pot

Re: Sound is different after this change...why

Is there any chance you switched some wires and have it in parallel, or have only one coil working?

Re: Sound is different after this change...why

dont think so,,,wired acording to duncan chart...black to hot terminal on pot,
2 ground wires to top of pot...2 other wires twisted together..

Re: Sound is different after this change...why

You have green/bare and red/white paired, and the red/white is soldered and taped, right?

Re: Sound is different after this change...why

green and bare soldered to top of pot...red and white twisted and soldered together and taped.

Re: Sound is different after this change...why

What you are describing doesn't make sense to me then. Removing the tone pot and switch from the circuit should give you MORE output, not less. Although your tone will have more highs/treble, if thats what you are hearing.

I have never considered my Demon a "distortion class" humbucker, its a very clean pickup. If I want to push an amp into distortion easily, I use my duncan distortion. There may have been something wrong with your wiring BEFORE, and you are hearing the Demon's true character NOW. I'm just grasping at straws here for an explanation of what you are experiencing. :?:

Re: Sound is different after this change...why

well I gave up and I've replaced the Screamin with a Custom 5...now I'm trying to figure out how to get the similar tone by adjusting my amp...any toughts?
