Sound Kudos courtesy of Pearly Gates!

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
So, played a charity show with the work band last Friday.

Signal chain was

Guitar > Pod Go > Direct to Board, which I mostly played either:

TS9 > Fender Twin > Whatever the Twin Speaker cab is or
SD-1 > JCM800 > 4x12 Greenback

And the occasional Tremolo, Delay, Flanger, Reverb or whatever. Played all kinds of tunes; Black Crows, Steppenwolf, Bryan Adams, The Weekend, Miley Cyrus, Counting Crowes, Gin Blossoms, KISS, Cheap Trick, Tina Turner.

And a few of the guitar Cognizanti said that Irish (My Green LP Classic) sounded really great. That guitar happens to have a PG set in it that includes a regular PG neck. But the bridge is a Custom Shop PG wound to 9k by MJ. That 9k bridge PG just does it for me - and apparently others too.

I have been playing the crap out of that guitar for the past couple of months. Really love it for all around anything playing. Was using all kinds of pickup combos too - Bridge, Neck, Bridge + Neck.

The pearly gates is my favorite pickup. I like that I can coax rudeness or sweetness out of it without it being overly hot. I would love to have a seven string version or at least one that resembles the top end and midrange qualities of it. Going though the custom shop sounds too experimental and I’d feel better actually getting to hear something that approximates it first.

Nope - just a plain old PG bridge up to 9k. I made one myself at the SDUG User Group day. Now I have 2.
- One in a Cherry Sunburst Caddy that I generally do hard rock with
- and one in Irish, my green Les Paul

I will mention I did indeed do some volume control use too. I'm usually an "on 10" guy, but definitely did some slight rolling back occasionally.

Never heard of a Hades or a PG '78

Trust in them.

If you have a stupid idea that won't work they will tell you, or suggest an alternative.

On of the reasons I love mind it plays great with the volume knob

The "Pearly '78" thing was just a joke...sort of. Seems like a 9K "PG" is pretty much a '78 model (same wire, magnet, etc as far as I know). Unless you have info to the contrary?

"Hades Gates" is the new "overwound PG" set for Billy G., wound to ~8.9K in the bridge, which is the same as the original Slash bridge.

Unless SD is doing something special with the magnet or using a non-standard wire, I'm not really sure what the benefit would be over the regular Slash/'78 models. Likely just a marketing move to keep Billy on the roster.

With the High Voltage at 8.6K and the Slash 2.0 at 9.3K, I'm starting to think Duncan's "Hot Vintage" category is getting a bit saturated. Someone better get in before the 8.7K and 8.8K spots are taken!

Think how cool you'll be!

For my taste, this is the red humbucker :)

So basically saying Billy Gibbons, Slash, EVH, and Me - same tonal geniuses. Ok. I can see that...

the 78 and pg dont sound that much alike to me, i havent tried the hades gates or slash 2.0 yet but both are on my list

Yeah - I've never done the '78, or even heard one to my knowledge. Could be wrong. Chasing EVH was never my thing.

The Hades Gates do come in that cool red color, though.

1. That is really cool
2. Needs Black poles
3. Would be awesome with the red chrome knobs.

Should I fall into a Gibson Voodoo Les Paul....I think these go in!
