Sound proofing a room

My wife want new carpet in one of our rooms. So my dreams may come true. I am going to put the carpet from that room on the floor, walls, and ceiling of my guitar room. How well with this sound proof the room? I have drums that I cannot bring to the house since I do not want to disturb the neighbors. How well with this work?

thanks, I did not know what forum to post this in

Re: Sound proofing a room

It will work okay, it's really tough to sound proof correctly. The tried and true way is to build a room in a room but it is tre cher.

Re: Sound proofing a room

Putting carpeting on the walls will leave you with a very boomy room that won't accomplish your purpose. You will only succeed in stopping high frequencies from escaping the room, and all the bass will still travel through the carpeting.

Most sound escapes rooms from the windows and doors. You can elimanate a lot of sound escaping with good weather seals, solid-core doors, and thick glass.

If you're not doing anything structural to the room, you can always add these products to the walls and under the carpeting. They will work way better than any carpet or padding will:

Speaking in terms of physics, the only way to stop sound is for it to be absorbed by mass. Carpet will absorb some of it, so sounds will not bounce around the room. It wont really sound proof the room, but it will help. The room in a room thing is the best way, but not very convenient.

So what can I do to prevent my neighbors from hearing the drums and cranked amps? Twilight should I put soemthing over the windows?

sorry twilight. I thought it was a link in your signature. Sat. is a day I stop thinking. I will check it out

Re: Sound proofing a room

There's a REAL difference between 'sound-proofing' which means that no sound (or very little) escapes or is transferred out of the room, and 'sound-treatment' which deals with the internal tone of the room.

HUGE difference.

Tossing carpet & foam on the walls & stuff isn't 'sound-proofing' that's pretty much "ghetto" treatment. It might make things "better" in the room, and maybe 5% better for the wife & kids but it's not gonna do anything to help your case with the neighbors.

Sorry to burst a bubble.

To really "sound-proof" and stop what's coming out of the space you need serious mass...multiple layers of sheetrock all caulked together, brick walls, sand filled concrete...stuff that's high in mass. Fiberglass & carpet won't stop sound, they'll just 'redirect' it for lack of a better laymans term. Mass is what stops sound and to do it right, if at all...it's gotta be done from the raw construction phase.

Maybe this'll help a bit; http://www.acoustics101.com/

Believe me, it's a really deep subject if you want to get into it.

WIll the stuff on the site I found help any? The 2 houses I worry about are both over 100 feet from the room I have my stuff in.
